Fred Dibnah's Traction engineHopefully this Traction engine won't take 27 years like Fred's took him.
I'm hope I can make it as close to the real thing as possible.
Here's how I want it to look.
Brought this from Flee bay second hand to start me off.
Striped it down and have so far painted the boiler and firebox.
I have ordered loads of parts and shiny things so will update as I go.

Now we know why you wanted the small rivets and hope it all works out as you hope it will as it will look outstanding.

Same here.

this will be a pleasure to watch but i wonder if it wont have been easier using a wilesco for the project, the mamod traction engine has totally wrong proportions in comparison to the Fred Dibnah engine in the picture. Unless ofcourse you will be altering stuff like the wheel positions etc. whichever way though i cant wait to see the finished product.

Yes, already ordered loads from there and I'm just waiting for them to be posted as Simon is to moving to new premises and postage has been delayed because of this.
The canopy Fred Dibnah signs have been ordered but I may give this a miss and sell the signs along with the canopy as the Traction engine i'm copying didnot have one.

Good luck with that mate, keep us posted!

Cheers James,
here's a little bit more i've done.
Painted the firebox now and the wheels. I have a solid flywheel coming (which will need painting) so all the round bits are nearly done.
The Mamod Engine although great just does not have enough rods and brass blocks running along the top of the boiler. Below is a picture of Fred's engine with what i'm on about.
I have started to look for things to make up for this. I have some nice rods and some copper piping and have even taken a plug apart to get at some brass blocks which I hopefully can use.

Looking good so far and great to know there are also others who take old items apart to see what parts inside will prove usefull.

Have just glued and painted the rivets to the engine. Went with some plastic pieces that were sort of right shape.
Next I cut the plug pieces up along with the length of steal rod and added to the engine. I found a lever that I have stuck to the cab side of the firebox.
The last thing i've done today is cut a piece of copper pipe and bent and added it to the boiler.

That looks good, what glue are you using and is it heat proof?

i guess you do not intend to ever fire this engine , correct?

Hi Les and Benchmark, no its purely a fun thing to do up and will be for display only when finished.
|
David68
|
Starting to look like something now.
Just need to wait for all the little bits and bobs to finish now.
I have a living van coming along with, Fred Dibnah signs and Long Vehicle sign. Pressure gauge, smokebox door and dart, green scuttle, Fred figure being made up and things like a tool box, oil can, running boards with boiler bands, two handle brakes a solid flywheel bag of coal and a bucket. There are most likely a couple of things I've not listed but thats most of it.

Thanks everyone for your nice and supportive comments.
Just got a call from forest-classics who have informed me that the living van will be posted tomorrow for me
In the meantime I have just received this pressure gauge. Its really the only thing I've seen gauge wise in pictures so just had to find somthing to match the best I could.

Very interesting indeed, it is a good impersonation artistically
The water tank is almost invisible, I missed it the first time. It needs to be green and huge.
The copper rods are a stroke of genius.

Yes your right. Will have to sort that tomorrow. Thanks for pointing it out. Can't believe I missed that
|

Thanks to Dr Rog for pointing out the water tank for me. I have now sourced one painted it and fixed it in place.
Its all but finished now. Just waiting on the Fred Dibnah figure and will need to fix a number plate to the funnel.
I have also painted the steering chains black and got some hose that needs to be fitted.
So here it is and I must say I'm very pleased with it.
