I used to use a hard drive as a coaster but got rid of it as too many people freaked out when I put my beer on what they thought was a good hard drive. You would of thought the felt I had glued to the underside would of been a bit of a give away.

If it can run a fairly recent browser, and take a wireless card it will do you fine. It doesnt take that much just to surf the web or read the forum.
I have a DOS machine to program a radio with. The radio has to be programmed with a slow, DOS machine, Windows will not work. The Radio dates from the mid 90s.

Can't complain for free. Have you got the charger? What's the model number. It'd make a nice little Linux server.

Aye it's got the charger, books and everything. And a box of floppy disks and a seperate floppy disk drive thingy.
It's a 514TXV whatever that means!

I would say Windows 98 would be appropriate, or maybe something like Vector Linux
We've been scrapping laptops of similar spec, mainly because Big Fat Fuzzy Panda antivirus makes them weep. Windows 98 also won't authenticate to a 2003R2 domain, meaning Microsoft has finally binned it as a network OS..
As to what it's worth... check ebay?
A few years ago I would have said that any laptop that can run at least win98 (well) was worth $100. You certainly don't find them cheaper in used computer stores. But then there's a limit as to how old a machine they will bother trying to sell.

It's a bit old and, by modern standards, low performance - but you could say the same about steam engines!
Just don't expect to run any new software on it. If what it's got works then use it. What has it got on it (if anything)?

Works, internet, everything

Well, the proof of the pudding is in the eating, as they say. Give it a try and see how if performs. Works and IE cover most things you're likely to want to do. Works is a bit limited if you're used to something like Office, and the hardware will be a bit slow if you're used to a modern machine. If you don't expect too much from it then it'll be ok, though. Just don't try to download any high resolution bitmaps!
