FS: a most excellent burglar alarum of ca. 1808

As sole agent to-day for Mr. John Linwood,
celebrated maker since eight years ago (anno 1800)
of spit-jacks operated automatically by clockwork--no need for a boy,

it is my great honour to present this new and serviceable product
on behalf of the firm.   Being as our stocks are severely limited for the foreseeable future, and past,
the Example shewn in the infomercial below is limited to a quantity of one, the one you see, and
to the best cash offer,
which will be considered here only if it be suitably generous.

for those with weaker eyes,

We hardly need remind the owners of fine and Valued Collections,
of the need for Security and Precaution, both of which are supplied by our unique device.

May Providence spare you a visitation of Burglars
should you tarry  and fail  to protect your Homes.

Good Night,
MTA

So that is how they did it in the olden days

You should rig that up to your Cat's food bowl Reid, so that when a Toad tips it over or pulls it it sets it off
James

LOL MTA! I don't think that would bother the toad much though

Have learned very little so far about the history of this relic.
It seems to be so rare that even the clock collectors have not seen one before.

A writer for the NACWC organization wants to make a small article for the club's bi-monthly bulletin.
That group is decades old and is subscribed to by the great collectors--
and so perhaps this will turn up more information about the Linwood alarm.

The thing works so well, so simple and sturdy.
It's quite a testament of "if it feels right it is right" as John/bogstandard might say.

I will determine somehow its value (but no comparable has been found yet),
and so am putting out feelers.

It looks great installed on the inside upper corner of a swing-out door,
and the pull string is hooked to the door frame, and then it's set.
It's quite nice and makes me think that the old days were not so secure as people tend to think.
Burglars were about, always.

Reid, I know a thing or two about clocks but I've never seen anything like that.....as to the value, I have no idea. I think it's wonderful.

... it's unique, Reid! Where do you get all these wonderful things, friend?
