Fuelfired "Poor mans 25G"Hi all
Been nursing the idea of taking my oldest Jensen #75 off the base and refit it to a massive wooden base and mount a heavier #55 flywheel to give more real-slow-chuffin oldschool Jensen abilities...
The entire project is a combo of me trying to build a tribute to the old Jensen look & sound, alongside my own appearently everlasting urge to play with toys which i should have outgrown decades ago
Well it`s starting to take form now.
The flywheel is on its way from mini-steam.com along with some other "good`n`great to have parts" for Jensen steam engines in general and the base has today received its final layer of boat-varnish/lacquer.
Hope the 10 layers applied will satisfy even the most hardcore Jensen-fan out there (It totally went down the drain at 5. layer because of mosquitoes deciding to use the base as non-takeoff runway, so had to keep going
Gone and made myself a halfsize fullwidth base out of the same piece of board for my #15 to place behind the 75...Hence the fuelfired "Poor mans 25G"
Hope to get the setup done this week, more pics to follow...
Cheers from Denmark

I generally have always used a teak colored tung oil applied with 0000 steel wool.
I power sand first with 320 to get out any scratches or water stains.
It seems to work and the tung oil seals the wood.
It does not attain the hi gloss of varnish but I'm showcasing the engine, not the board.

a nice base, I will watch this build with interest

Know lacquering the base 10 times with 2 component marinevarnish is a bit overkill
But then again the woodwork has through the historical comments regarding Jensens finish i`ve seen been the only thing that were often criticised...That will not happen to my "Poor mans 25G"

Jan, if you will be "firing" that Jensen, I would recommend lining the bottom of the firebox with copper or brass sheet as the heat will ruin that nice finish. I did one that way and extended the copper sheet under the meths tank as well since meths will spot the wood finish as a minimum, ruin it as a maximum depending on how finish reacts to meths.
Still, great idea, go for it and you will have the best of the old and new. Adding the 55 flywheel may require some hollowing out of the wood beneath it to permit proper clearance, but easy to do.

I think it'll look fantastic.
Frankly, most of the wood Jensen's I have bought have had a terrible finish on the wood.
The old varnish was bubbled and generally water stained.
Then again,, it's 50 years old or more.
I should look so good.

Looking forward to seeing this develop.

The base board does look very princely well done but be careful as Rog says, as heat is not a friend of marine lacquer which tends to soften when it is exposed to heat . Unless of course you want to leave the engine as a shelf queen which would be a pity.

I had given the heat-issue some thoughts before starting the project and even had some very nice plans laid on how to remove material and create some ventilation under the boilerhouse, but have since come to the conclusion that i`ll mount everything in its proper place, and then steam her up like never before to get every flaw in the construction to show itself, so that all problems can get solved in one operation

I really like the mods that you are doing and also the way in which your going about it all.
Good idea with the flywheel too.
Hope it all finishes up to your satisfaction. ... Would be nice to see how it all turns out to.

A handsome looking base.

Starting to take some form the project
Even had a little "testrun" to see how the heatresistant paint on the boilerhouse would handle some Esbit tablets ( I know you all love the smell of those )
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HC...=HL1338457588&feature=mh_lolz
All needed now should be the missing parts and then a new seal in the boilerwindow, would need to remove the window from the boiler anyway to get rid of the lime buildup on it
As soon as i receive the #55 flywheel and the boilerstraps i`ll finish the project...
Cheers

Jan, it is coming along beautifully, I really like the layout.
I believe with the 55 flywheel however you will need to cut some metal on the engine base for clearance as well as remove a little wood beneath it. Another member made something like you are doing a few years ago and if I remember right, he had to do a bit of "surgery" to fit the wheel. It was worth it however, gave a good bit more momentum to the wheel and smoother operation.

Thanks
What i hoped to achieve with it at least when the big flywheel arrives...and i get that Wilesco governor centered a little better as it wobbles a bit right now
