G'day

I've just signed up here after having the place pointed out to me by Mister Indiana Rog. Looks like a lot of good info and interesting stories here.

I'm just getting back into steam after many many years of doing other things.
I'm an IT worker, which is a job that sprung from my main hobby of tinkering with PCs and networks. One day a couple months ago I decided that having a hobby that was also my job was going to drive me around the twist soon. So I got my old Wilesco D6 down from the shelf, where it had gathered dust for more than a score of years, cleaned it up, fired it up, got a bit of a thrill, and now here I am a few months later and many hundreds of dollars poorer!

I'm mostly a Wilesco man. They just seem to strike the right balance of features with me, though I am planning to branch out (Just bought an Empire overtype style on ebay).

Aside from the D6, I have an older Wilesco Old Smokey, a brand new D22 twin, a D455 vertical boiler model (bought because it was so cheap and no one else seemed to want it), and I've also got a Jensen 25 on order (for running indoors in the winter).

I've also set up a youtube site/channel/whatevertheycallit where I'm posting rotten quality videos captured on my old Digital Elph camera that tends to render movement as stop-motion

I'm currently exploring the wonders of alternative fuels, since the D22 eats a fortune in Esbit, and those continuing adventures are/will be chronicled on youtube.

That's about all I have to say.

Be seeing you.

Welcome Mr Occlusion. Great that Rog has led another person to our forums. I hope you stay and have lots of fun. Don't be put off by the Mamod bit in our title. We have lots of Wilesco collectors on here (I own 7) and we all get on fine. I look forward to reading your posts and seeing lots of pics of your engines.

Welcome to the forums Mr Occlusion.

Good to have you here. Plenty of Wilesco owners here, as well as other engines.

You should enjoy it here. It's a friendly helpful group.

Was going to warn you that the engine collecting is addictive, but I see by your post of money spent, you have already found that out

Have fun, and again, Welcome
Sandman

A big Scottish forum welcome mate.

We hope you enjoy it here.

Please feel free to chat about anything steam related. You'll find many like minded friends willing to do just that.

I see you are from Canada. I have many friends in your home country and visit at least once a year. Our friends are in Simcoe Ontario.

Earlier this year we crossed the border into Detroit and met up with two of my forum friends, Indiana Rog and Oldstuff.

I hope you make as many friends as I have here, and that you enjoy your stay with us.

Hi from Australia.
I have a large selection of Australian and English engines but no Wilescos but today I got to fire up a Wilesco traction engine for the first time.
My brother in law has had one in his cupboard for the last 20 years and I talked him into getting it out and giving it a run and it ran beautifully despite being dormant for over 20 years and the fuel tablets being over 25 years old.

Look forward to your posts.

Hey Mr. O (I like that abbreviation someone else coined)...glad you made the jump to our forum. We are such that you can pull up a stool most any time and jump in. Some folks read a lot before becoming posters, others weigh in immediately. Whatever suits you!! Many of us check in regularly, share triumphs of restoration, share failures too...but always get good feedback and technical help where desired.

I can tell right off...if you are looking for an Esbit alternative, you will find denatured alcohol (US term) or methylated spirits (UK term...also called meths) is an ideal fuel for these little engines. I have converted several Esbit runners to operating on meths with excellent results...cheaper, cleaner, doesn't smell as bad and seems to have higher heat output...all good features. The stuff is sold here in the US for about $16 USD per US gallon, bit more in quart size...easily found at most hardware and home improvement type stores...check the paint section. Reproduction meths burners of various shapes and sizes are available from several sources we can connect you up with.

Again, welcome to the forum...if you are from Canada that is great, we need a few more folks from up 'nort.

cheers,
Rog
Mister Occlusion

Thanks for the welcome, all.

I'm definitely going to have a few questions soon

First I've got to take a quick video of this burner that I've begun to slap together today and get it posted so you can see my ham fists in action!

hey Hey HEY, Wilesco is my thing Na we can share it. I love wilescos to and am beginning to look for a double acting jensen stationary. Welcome, I have seen many of your videos before you joined up and love them. Happy steaming

Hi Mr 'O',

I hope you enjoy your time with us on the forum.

The only minor problem with the Esbit burning Jensens and Wilesco's is that to have to remove the draw that the table holder slides into but no big deal.

I think there's also a fuel called Sterno over there, it's sort of semi solid form of metho(s). I'm about to convert my Jensen 75 to a metho burner as the Ebit burning trim is too short - 7 -10 minutes for my liking.

Cheers

G'day, and thanks. Already in a few short days this has proven to be a grand place

I'm beginning to realize that, re the burner slide.. It gets in the way of being able to build a taller burner and reservoir. I'm not at the point where I want to start taking things apart, though, so I'll experiment with it as is for now.

I went to a few camping stores and looked for Sterno while I was on my hunt for denatured alcohol. I could find neither

Seems the only things we use here for stove fuels are Methanol, Naptha, and Propane, so I'm stuck with methanol.

If I get a nice tax return next year I just might invest in a butane setup.
rangerssteamtoys

The burner slide comes right out by simply unbending 4 flanges and then comes out the bottom. I did this then made my own burner slide from some soda cans.
Mister Occlusion

When I joined I really didn't stop to think about the name. I just pulled it out of a hat.. actually it's a character from a friend's short story.

But, I've never really liked honorifics, and with the way I was brought up I'm certainly not entirely comfy with being a "Mr". Certainly not to my elders anyway.

...That's why I tend to address you all in the same way, because to do otherwise is to me having a lack of respect that I seem to insist upon by my less than thoughtful choice of a name here.

So, it's been a few months, and more than a few hundred posts, and you've all been grand and I don't think I'm going anywhere, and I'm getting over my need for anonymity, so...

"Mr. O" is fine, if you prefer.

But you can just call me Mark, if you like.

...just not Mark-O, or any derivative thereof .... ;P
IndianaRog

Mark...tis good to call you by name...

cheers,
Rog

I've always wanted a fedora. I just don't have the face for it (and probably too big a head to even find one that fits )
