German Engine..what maker is it?

If you got an old german engine and you are not sure what maker it is: just ask me!
I got some catalogues and experience, so I can tell you!
(well, i'll do my best.. )

I am curious to see your pics

Greets
Mirko
steamyjim

Did you identify the one on my site?
Dampfzauberer

Hmm....it is a very small picture..It cannot be enlarged on your site...
Could you send me the original picture??
steamyjim

Ill get some better ones
Dampfzauberer

Is there a kind of badge or sticker on it??
Like under the pedestal or on the side of the firebox?
Sometimes only stamped, like J.F. for Falk ??
steamyjim

No, no makers mark just 12/6 for the cost scratched in
steamyjim

Pics are now in the pics section

Here's one for you. Just sold on german ebay. Looks like a hybrid Wilesco.....................Seller didn't seem to have any idea either.............

Dampfzauberer

Hm...thats a hard case....
I do not know much about these engines as they are very late production.
Either this machine is built by wilesco in their early years or it is a product of the German Democratic republic (german say: DDR)
If it made in GDR there are not much catalogues left, I never saw one...
Manxman

Sorry, but here's a hard one. A few of us have tried to identify this. The closest we can get is that it is very like a Carette car that has been on ebay a couple of times. I think it could be very old but can't find a pic to confirm its history.

Dampfzauberer

I will pass the pics to a friend.
He knows that better than me because he is specialised on such very old toys.
Could I have a picture of the lower surface? I would like to se the cylinder...
tmuir

Here is the post when Manxman originally got it.
It has a pic of the underside of the car.

Hi Mirko.

Below is a picture of my Brothers Bing that he restored

But I was wondering if you could put a rough date on it as I don't think he knows?.

I have included the before pic too, as the flywheel, chimney, and burner are homemade.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Dampfzauberer

If the boilder dia. is 4,5cm it is a130/860...if it is 5,2cm it is a 130/861.....this engine should be biult around 1915

PS. the painting of the cylinder is wrong, it has to be just black, without red pinstripes
Otherwise very good restauration! I must say
Wallace

Thanks very much for that info mate

It's really appreciated
steamyjim

Steamgranny, that engine looks like it has the boiler from a messed about D24 but the engine is definatley not wilesco
MooseMan

Mirko, I have two for you:

This one I don't know the identity of:

This one I do know, but it would be interested to have it confirmed:

Both are in my collection.
James

Moosey, does the top one have a Mamod flywheel?
Dampfzauberer

The first is a very early Bing (because of the shape of the chimney and the safetyvalve), with non-original whistle..and like james said a mamod flywheel....and a selfmade burner (doesn't look like a bing burner)

The second one, I am not really sure, but I think it is a HA-Mobil engine from Switzerland i think....am I right???
Dampfzauberer

Or if it not HA-Mobil then it it sure a german product of the GDR, isn't it?
MooseMan

Very good! I've had it ID'd by an expert on GDR engines as an "EPD", which stands for Eberhard Päßler, Dresden. It's from the late sixties.

Thank you for IDing the first engine....I've had that for a good few years, and although I've always suspected that it's nothing "special" I'm very fond of it - it runs beautifully.
Dampfzauberer

I also thank you for the GDR engine...i saw them several times on ebay and never really knew what it is....because I am not specialised on this engine..they are too late for me
Now I know it better next time someone asks me
MooseMan

It wouldn't normally be my thing either.....objectively it really is an ugly thing....but somehow it ended up in the UK, in pieces, and I fell in love with it. It runs really, really well, and the GDR over-engineering is really quite impressive.
If you ever need any info on GDR engines (EPD, EKT, Sachsenmeister etc) let me know and I'll put you in touch with my mate (and your compatriot) Thomas.
Dampfzauberer

Hey, EKT is the thing I have several driving models from ekt (you can see them on my website)
But unfortunately i do not know a thing about E.K.T......
Perhaps this Thomas can tell me something about it???
steamgranny

Hi Mirko! I've just purchased this Bing overtype in bits with a replacement, unfinished base & wonder if you can identify it for me & most importantly what colour/decoration the base should be?

I found identical one on Cedge's site but no indication of model/date & base paint not original
Scroll down half way:

James

I LOVE the chimneys on them Bings!!
IndianaRog

SG...not sure if all Bing's were done like this, but here is how my Bing overtype (locomobile) looks on the base:

I believe that pattern was a lithograph bonded to the surface...but it would not be hard to replicate with a good photo of one straight on then replicate the pattern and print it out to decal paper.

cheers,
Rog

It is time to show a really good site to you:

http://www.cah.nl/smp/engine/

Now please select above BING and next to it OVERTYPE ENGINES

There you have your engine in quite good condition!
That's the easiest way for me to show you..also have a catalogue, but with not coloured pictures...so this one will help i hope!

Oh! Mirko, that is magic!! What a useful site, thank you
As I feared it has a patterned base but believe it would be fairly easy, as Rog states, to somehow reproduce the design & something to occupy upcoming winter months
Thanks both of you.
Dampfzauberer

I would suggest you to watch out for another of these engines. They are not that rare...watch out for one wich is maybe not all original or has missing parts BUT has a fine original base...
steamgranny

Yep! The chimney clinched it for me too
