Girth Mamod

Having just been given a lathe/milling machine, I am going to seriously build a scaled up Mamod.

Questions are:

1) What model should I do? (not too hard for my first, maybe SE3?)
2)Mike, would you be able to make me a big decal for it?

How about an SE4
oldstuff

You're gonna have fun, mate!
steamyjim

is that like the 1/3rd sized mamod sr1 that someone i knows built

he takes it round the rallys behind a 4inch scale foster
James

Aye.

I could probably do the SE4 if I had all of the measurements and that.
James

What model would you do?
steamyjim

probally a twin cylinder MM2 or a wilesco D32
James

No! Not a bloody D32!

I need one that I have got really I guess
oldstuff

Cut your teeth on a simpler project...minimizes the frustration factor!
James

I thought about doing a big SE3. What do you think? Only problem would be the boiler fittings
SPOKESMAN

You need to learn how to use the machines first!!
James

I need to unseize it first
oldstuff

Would be VERY COOL. You can make fittings, safety valves, bushes. Right now
there's a guy on ebay selling steam valves with handles and bushes for
making whistles, etc. Might not ship to UK, though...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI....em=280083056386&rd=1&rd=1
Titan

It has to be said... 5 inch gauge SL1 !!!

Exactly 4 x full size!

Might be more of a challenge than you are looking for mind!
steamyjim

can i ask why not a wilesco D32

dare you disrespect the D32
Mamodman123

Titans idea gets my vote! Would be a lot simpler than an SE3 or SE4 anyway!
James

Ahh SJ, this reminds me of MSN where all you say is D32 this and D32 that

I would build a girth loco, but then it would need girth track and girth rolling stock
Mamodman123

umm maybe a simple MM1 then?
James

Or SE3?
Mamodman123

James wrote:

Aye! Seems simple enough, the pressed base might be difficult though, might be worth having a go at the pre-war one?
James

Aye, but the SE3 is so cool!

I could get a net for a raised base (as the SE3 corners on the base ain't joined are they?) and then press the sides down
Mamodman123

James wrote:

Only one isn't Jimbo
James

On mine none are joined!
Mamodman123

Yes sorry i was thinking of the SP4
James

I will ask the old man when he gets home. I would be trying to get it done in time for next STIA

It will be plain sailing once you have the cylinders and flywheel done Boiler will be the easiest part
James

It's the whistle, safety valve, and throttle that is worrying me.

Life is no fun without challenges though!

Would truely be a show stopper

they'll be one of the easiest parts! The whistle is made in 2 pieces then soldered together!
James

Ahh! that's ok then!

Just a big thing to take on, but will be very rewarding!
bessytractor

I did seriously consider building a big SL1. I wrote the idea off because I wasn't sure a 5" loco would work too well with a pot boiler!!

I decided to knuckle down to Todd the coffee pot instead!
James

Well my old man said he is getting me some sheet steel home tomorrow, and I can start doing the base then
James

Anyone fancy an SE3 with a base 66cm x 75cm? 9cm long cylinders, and 48cm long boiler?
James

51cm meths burner (with handle)
Griffin

Drilling all those holes will keep you busy
James

Aye

The boiler won't be as simple as it sounds. One that big will have to be certified. It might be best to find a ready made boiler and design the rest around that.

It's a great idea, though. I would suggest something simple but impressive - like an old style SE1/2 with a flatbed base and exhaust throttle. A cast engine frame might be a bit of a problem though.

A loco might be a bit abitious but track would be no problem if you made it 3 1/2" (the same as the Hornby Rocket).
James

Doubt it would need a certificate mate

If it's made to a good standard I don't see why it wouldn't pass the test.

Basically the boiler will be easier to make than the pressed items, i.e the supports, which will be very difficult.

The boiler is just a brass tube with two end caps soldered on. Relativly easy compared to the rest of the SE3 parts

You wouldn't find a large boiler that looks like an SE3 one either
oldstuff

James wrote:

Not for home use, maybe. But keep in mind you'll be dealing with substantially
higher boiler pressures in order to push those big pistons.
James

Steamyjim said if it has a boiler capacity under 2litres it doesn't need one. Will just have to work to that figure and maybe do a boiler inside a boiler so it is under 2 litres but still the same size
oldstuff

James wrote:

2 liters? That's huge! You'll be pulling trucks out of the mud with that engine!

Definatly not for home use,

All depends on the operating pressure
James

Set the safety valve
Mamodman123

James wrote:

Yes!

Don't let it put you off James! don't be scared out of something you want to do!

James

Hmm. It would pass the test I'm sure. I might even be able to turn the whistle into a secondary safety valve

Good idea. Like the Rocket boiler: it's only about half the size it looks.
Mamodman123

James wrote:

Possibly, but if it's working on the same prinicple of a Mamod, the cylinders will effectivly act as a safety valve when pushed away from the engine block
James

Aye, should be exactly the same
Chris

Don't forget to add a dynamo so you can power your house with the thing!

I'm going to take out some shares in the meths companies, the share price will rocket once you get around to powering it.

That's true
James

Will take about 1 or 2 bottles per steaming

Unless you have to use gas?
Chris

That will then only work until the Russians turn off our gas supply!
James

When I have built this one, I MAY build another for sale
TE1A_man

James wrote:

I would do the bus
Or the TE1A.
SPOKESMAN

Its going to be a rather big job James.
James

Aye Mike I know, but would be bloody cool finished!

It is certainly going to happen, as even if this lathe we got don't work, he is going to do it at work
sparky

you could start on something simular to what i first made with my dads help when i was younger, a little verticle steam engine, it was brilliant and they are so much fun or our you wanting something a bit more techniqal
James

Naa, buildng this first
sparky

fare enough mate
James

Would be awsome though wouldn't it?

Imagine that at STIA

Sparks...you still have it? Would be cool to see it.
James

Right guys. Been having a think about this one with dad. The boiler tube would cost around £50 on it's own. Meths might not have enough heat to work it, and I couldn't cast the flywheel. The other 2 I can sort I think, but I have a plee.

Does anyone have/know anyone who has the facilities to cast me a SE3 flywheel, but 2 or 3 times the size?

Any help will be greatly appreciated, as I think alot of people would actually like to see this one running.
James

If I can't, I will just have to scrap the idea and go for a home made engine to my own design. But I don't want to do that
Mamodman123

James wrote:

Will be difficult James..... I can't see how you will cast it.

Maybe ask the bloke with the big roller how he made it? that's if you can contact him somehow?
James

No idea who he is.

my school has a foundry but I'm not sure I could adequetly cast spokes!
James

Could you ask mate?

Does your school have the means to cast it? Mine did. You'd have to make a patern out of wood then cast it in sand.
James

Not sure, they have a sand pit for casting, but probably wouldn't let me anywhere near it

Hmmm he definately didn't make that big mamod! Thats for sure!
James

Nope, not his mate. He filmed it at a rally
Roly Williams

James wrote:

There might be somebody who would do it for you if you made the patern.
James

Aye, but you have to get the pattern perfect and all that. No idea how I can do it
James

Got it. Going to make a small engine first I think, to see if all my ideas work, so I ain't jumping in on this SE3 and wasting my money.

The idea for the flywheel is to get a solid lump of aluminium, turn it, make it into a circle, drill holes as big as you can get in the different parts, then file down into the shape I need.

I should have the SE3 done before STIA 2008. Dad said if we hit a brick wall we will just find another way around it, so one way or another, it will be done!

What engine is on the list Jimbo?
James

Just something homemade to my own design. The tube one this SE3 alone is costing me £50+
Mamodman123

It will do! Metal isn't cheap!
James

Anyway mate, back to school tomorrow

I'm off now, night MM
James

Aye. The good thing is I can get the base for free And the firebox, and the engine frames
Mamodman123

James wrote:

Good good!
SPOKESMAN

How big is this SE3 going to be?
Wallace

So you are making a girth SE3 James?

Going to be hard with the flywheel, I agree. If you want a exact replica especially, otherwise I was thinking of a early model SR back wheel as a flywheel.

Otherwise, you need to look for someone who does what is called "Billet"

Billet wheels on cars are a one piece thing, made from a solid block of alloy, which they machine and stuff.
Might cost a fair bit though. I know they can use high pressure water to do cut outs
James

If I do it the size I intend, the base will be:

72cm by 66cm.

Boiler:

48cm by 15cm.

3 times.

The normal x 2 so is that twice or 3 times?

Yes! It'll be bloody big either way

Might put this SE3 in a trailer
Roly Williams

Hook up a generator to it and you should be able to power one of the electric Jensens from it

With a boiler that size (2.26 lts) you'll need a certificate. It's a controlled device at that volume, especially for public exhibitons. I would speak to a specialist model boiler maker about the design & construction. There's a bit more to it than just making it bigger, a pressurised vessel of this size is a very very dangerous thing.
James

Aye I know it is, but danger=fun as danger=steam engines
