Glasgow model steam boat club?

I've heard that there is a Glasgow model steam boat club that has regular meetings and I was wondering where this actually takes place and if any of you attend? I'd like to get along and have a shake down run with a wee boat and have a blether.

Hi Ruairidh,

Being based in Glasgow I can hopefully point you in the right direction.

Firstly there is the Glasgow Richmond Model Boat Club ( http://www.grmbc.org.uk/index.html - sadly this was first posted in 2004 and has never really been updated since ). They do a really good start of season display for the public usually in May with a navy battle with fireworks and exploding island, etc.

Then there is the Clydebank Model Boat club ( http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robert.mcmanus/index2.htm - again a little slow on updates ).

And the East Kilbride Model Boat Club ( http://www.ekmodelboatclub.co.uk/index.html ).

And have a look at the Scottish Federation of Model Boat Clubs for more information ( http://www.sfmbc.net/index.html ).

Sadly due to Third Party Public Liability Insurance cover in part, etc. you will not be able to just turn up with a steam boat and go sailing. It will need to be checked out by an approved person and meet certain standards. This will include fitting an oil trap to the exhaust steam outlet to prevent contamination of the public water you will be 'sailing on'. This is the bit that has prevented me from joining so far as I need to have time available to arrange these checks, and over the last 2 years that has not been possible with all my steam train tours worldwide.

Hopefully something I can get done this year.

Still not had time yet but I've got a Cheddar Models Launch which I'll add to this section of the Forum soon. And 2 more Cheddar Models marine engines, 1 a kit to be built up with 2 boats already waiting for this to be fitted.

Glasgow model boats

Thank you so much for the information on the clubs Chris! I'm a recent re-addition to Glasgow as i've not lived here since studying around ten years ago so i'm getting reaquainted with it all. The Krick actually has the steam trap so is in MARPOL compliance I'll have to just pop along to one of the places and sort out the tests to be done. The plant itself is fine but i suspect that the RC might require some trimming. I'm a marine engineer myself so it's the marine plant that i have a greater interest in. I look forward to seeing pics of the cheddar plants in their hulls! Ruairidh.

Yes Sir, It's a Krick 2 steam plant with a gas burner and a retrofitted condenser. She's a very well built little thing and runs perfectly In fact it's the same model as Cedge shows in his steam gallery. A slightly dodgy thing about it though, It was posted from the Netherlands to the UK with a full gas burner tank!

Hi Ruairidh,

You've probably found out already, but the Glasgow Richmond Model Boat Club have a new website - http://www.glasgowrichmondmbc.co.uk/

Not too keen on the method used for photos, some sort of flash powered thing.

Their start of season day is worth a visit, if you've not meet up with them yet, and I see they've got a Lifeboat & Steam day mentioned in the events but no date yet.

Not sure if I'll be in Glasgow on May 25th as I start a new job in Aberdeen in May.

Thanks for the link Chris! I didn't know about the new site but it's good to see it up and running. The format is a bit iffy but i'm not fussed.

Unfortunately i'll miss the 25 of May too as i'll be away with work too. Still, i'll pop down on a quiet Wednesday or Sunday and introduce myself.

Thanks again,

Ruairidh.
