Glasgow Transport museum.

Well i had one of my regular trips to Glasgow Transport museum yesterday. A great place for all to go to should you be passing through! The highlight of the place for me is the display of model ships. Truly amazing. Here's another one of the highlights though.

The Transport Museum was best when it was in the old tram depot at Albert Drive. When that building was condemned it moved to its current location, but interestingly the Tramway Theatre now occupies most of the old building.

The model Ships used to be in the Art Galleries across the road originally, and another feature that used to be there was the old working models of beam engines, etc. I used to spend lots of time pressing the buttons and then watching it all go round slowly.

Hopefully those old working models have been put in storage at the outstation in Nitshill, where the NBL loco which has just been repatriated from South Africa is also hiding (sadly I missed its 2 day display in George Square last year).

The new Museum of Transport has already had to have a design change due to some problem with the material for the wave roof, and if the failures of the Glasgow Tower, Scottish Parliament, Braehead Indoor Ski Ramp, and now the Clyde Arc Bridge are anything to go by, then the new Museum will probably end up falling into the Clyde, and sinking the Glenlee!

At least they still have the 4 pre grouping Scottish locos, although plans to get one back in steam recently have stalled.

Look how clean that floor is.
No oil drips anywhere, guess they don't run it much.

Memories

The last time I went to Glasgow Museums was with my brother when I was Apprentice. Good day out that was.

Went up via the Settle to Carlisle line over the Ribble Head viaduct, spent 3 hours in total love and bewilderment with the model ships. left to go to the station on the way back and saw a closing model shop  - Went in and purchased a brand new live steam Hornby Rock for £55.00 - still have it!!

Got on the train back,  fog bound at Crew and pulled back into Nottingham at about 1am the next morning

Brilliant Day  -

HOW DO I REMBER - IT WAS 5TH NOV 1981, THE DAY THAT THEY ANOUNCED THE ROYAL WEDDING , CHAS & DI

THANKS FOR REMINDING ME

H2o vapour I wonder what model shop that was? Was it very near to Central Station, the Clyde Model Dockyard moved to under the 'Heilanman’s Umbrella’, which is the name given to the rail bridge over Argyll Street, which runs under the platforms of the station. It closed some time in the 1980s.

Hi Chris,

Whilst I can't be sure, it was very near the station and an old shop , very small, Square and stacked up high. I can't remember much, the price, points above and the Dizzy Dora that served us. Oh, and the stiff arms the next day having carried it for what seemed miles.

I would like to think that it was the Clyde model Dock yard shop , that  would fill me with some satisfaction.

I am envious of the elder generation glassweagions, I have a friend now in his Seventies who remanises about trips on the pleasure steamers on the Clyde, Duchess of Montrose, Hammilton, etc. Also the boat section of the museum , best museum in the world in my opinion , I went in when it was in od tram sheds , very attmospheric.

Thanks

We still have the last ocean going Paddle Steamer in the world based in Glasgow - the P.S. Waverley. She cruises a lot of UK each year.

I liked the Museum of Transport best when it was at the old Tram depot in Albert Drive as well, but at that time the Model Ships (and many of these models were the ones you would find in the shipyards boardrooms) were in the Kelvingrove Art Galleries, which is across the road from the current M of T.

M of T is due to move to a new location on the riverbank of the Clyde as part of the regeneration, but our track record with new buildings, bridges, towers, etc. means that it is doomed to have some sort of failure (flew over the site yesterday and noticed they are extending the old quayside into the Clyde so thats where the failure will happen, particularly as that is where the SS Glenlee is due to be reberthed).

She is a frequent visit to Bournemouth.
She looks spendid, and even better at night all lit up.

Ships

Last time I saw the Waverley was about 10 years ago. I was on the back lawn of Osborne house (Queen Victoria's residence - Isle of white, overlooking the Solent)

It was about 13.30 and a nice warm summer day - After a moments silence - wife getting board and wondewring about my sanity -  I said to my Mrs  - that can only be the Waverley. she looked brilliant funnels racked back and a splendid wash, sailing out of Portsmouth across the Solent.  She must have been doing 14 knots.

By coincidence last year I was on holiday in North Wales, playing with the kids at the end of Banger Pier, when an old boat came into the distance.

Quiet moment - Wife Kicks me etc etc , Thanks the Balmoral, waverley's sister ship I said. Mrs looks at me it's 2 miles out How do you know that  - I'll bet you I said. Yes I was right. she is the other ship that sails around the coast in the traditional way - ex Red Funnel of Southampton.

Got some good pictures of her

THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES GENTS

nothing beats a triple expansion horizontal at 15 knots.
My family have been members of the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society for years so we have often travelled on Waverley.  We also have been on tours to the shipyards when shes been refitted.
