globe valves and fitting

a few pics of the steam valves ive just completed. also pictured is a rough bit of brass i "cut "them from. i started to take pics of the making of the valves but with trying to work out the post with pics  i STUFFED UP!!   3 HOURS WORK DOWN THE DRAIN !!! so i forgot about taking pics and just made the globe valves. each globe valve took me 5 hours each!!!! they are simple to make but are very time consuming. if i lived in the states i would just buy them! but ive made mine to 1/4 bsf so i can screw them into my mamods.

Must be nice to have that ability.
Well done!

thanks phil. i must say im really chuffed with them and found them very exciting to make. i have to wait till liz gets home from hospital so i can use them. we have some very exciting applications for them.

Well done Glenn, they came up nice.
Every engine should have a throttle on it!!

thanks bk. these are the prototypes.   i need eight of them  and at $50 au each????? and then they are 1/4 ME and i would have to make adaptors. if i lived in the states i could get all that i need for $120 but here in oz $400 to $500... its the postage and tax that kills the wallet.

Wow ....talk about homemade!

Nice work!

I cheated and used small brass draincocks (plumbing parts) for mine ...I didn't wanna pay $30 for those fancy little valves that probably leak anyhow.

Great work Glen.
I know what you mean on prices.
To plumb all my engines up to my boiler cost me over $200 with all the valves, fittings, pipe, T peices etc.
Caprice

That looks very nice IMHO!!

How did you do the fittings to the brass nipples on the pipes? AFAIK the"contact surface" should be 60°. Did you use a countersink or drill?( I found that a 4 mm drill works and seals,  if the diameter isn't too large, but ideally a countersink should be used I guess.).
Haven't done valves though, just pipe connections.

(I should have seen your post earlier, just ordered four valves.
It would have inspired me to make my own. but next time... )

As much as I hate to admit it, I used one of those on the OKreation engine.  Worth every penny, and does not leak a drop.  Works mint.

thanks guys. they are worth making . anyone with a small lathe or adapted drill press could make them. all i use to make the small spindles is my drill press ...graver and files .
i found this listing.

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Live-Steam...faultDomain_0?hash=item1e587f795a

the listing has a pic of the plans. also on our sister forum there is a pdf to download.

a second thought to the ebay listing...... not really knowing how long the "t" is you may experience difficulty in tapping the thread which is why i made my "t s" a little longer. in the download pdf the plans dont give you much depth to start a tap for the spindle which is where i "stuffed up"     hense i made a pattern . the angled globe valve wasnt  made from my cast "bodies"  i used a small length of 1/2 round brass and screwed and loctited  in a seat.

Hi Chainsaw,

Very interesting post.
I am just about to buy 4 finished globe valves within the next couple of days. I think the web page address for cast kits would be ideal for my purpose.

As I have not done this before do you thing that I could produce valves from this kit using a small regular drill press without a lathe. If so I think I might invest in one as it would properly pay for itself once all 4 valves have been made.

Cheers Mick

they look like they should do the job
but I was considering the possibilty of these

no wonder i have problems if 1/8th BSP is about 1/2 inch. I think I will give them a miss then and stick to my aquarium airline taps untill i Sort something else out
Michael

I think I will invest in a small drill press and play around. There is only one way to gain experience and that is to try my hand and learn by my mistakes.

A minor setback is a lack of workshop. I live in an apartment and already my soldering and other small works that take place in the .living room with a small Black and Decker type work bench is beginning to look out of place.

Anyway reading your thread gives me inspiration.

Cheers Mick

im glad it has inspired you micheal my sucess has inspired me to look into putting a globe valve into and part of an engine frame similar to the wilson vertical featured on this forum .
