I never thought about fitting one to a stationary engine, good idea! How does the SP4 compare to the SP5? Obviously has one less cylinder, does it run faster?

It may be a little faster. The SP5 is a damn quick engine though . I'd actually say the SP5 is faster.
I'd definatly go for an SP5 if I had the choice, it's one of the best engines Mamod ever made

I have to say that I am enjoying my new SP5 (from 1980) I bought on sunday, the build quality is simply fantastic, heavy metal parts, none of this recent cost saving through tin walled sheet metal. Do you know if the boiler is lacquered as I was going to brasso off a bit of surface corrosion. I have only run the engine off of 3 tablet but the burner can take many more mss tablets than this.

The boilers were laquered on the SP5
The burners were designed for the early square Mamod tablets that's probably why you can fit more in . The burner take 3 Mamod sqaure tablets single row.

Can you refill the boiler without shutting down, then? Sounds handy

Yes you just remove the whistle and fit the filler valve. You must be careful not to put too much water in at once or you will cool the boiling water too much and the engine will stop

I use a syringe and hot water to fill up using the top up valve, but things can get a bit exciting (blinking hot!).

Really handy for the loco's, to keep them running longer

I would think that a sightglass would be a big plus if doing that.
