great dorset steam fair 2007 visit

for the first time, me and dad visited the great dorset steam fair.
we set off on friday, and on the way stopped off at the moors valley railway, i dont know about dad, but i had a very good time, 2 round trips, the first behind zeus, and the second behind a special double headed tinkerbell, apparently the original tinkerbell, called tinkerbell was its first running in about 20 years, the other engine was talos.

for those who havn't yet been to the moors valley, i recommend visiting it.

we arrived at the show friday afternoon, we tryed finding the right gate for a while, we couldnt find it, due to not very good signing if there is such a word. we asked a woman on the car park gate where pre paid camping was, she told us to go down the car park to a cabin, we got stopped half way down, and told guy we were looking for pre paid camping, he told us to go back up, along the road to gate 7, at last, someone who knows somthing, turned out the woman at the car park gate pointed us to the overnight car parking this is why i dont trust women......

anyway

we got ou pitch, set up, and sat around, we didnt have tickets for friday so we could go into the fair.

next day

saturday

from the campsite it didnt look so big,
we spent nearly all day looking round the market.. found a few interesting items, dad bought a mamod workshop grinding wheel for £8, and i bought an old film camera for£5, ... retro style
and a grease top hat-
we got a chance to look at the traction engine and roller field display, fpund it very good to watch, watching t.e's going nearly flat out up the hill.

then came the night fair, in my opinion it didnt fit in with the fair, most of the rides were 'put your life at risk' rides than 'sit down and enjoy' ride, there were a few steam powered attractions, such as the steam boats and the caracell,

the line up of showmans engines was the best part of the evening.
at least 20+ engines.

day 2

sunday

same thing realy, look round, buy stuff, watch the t.e's and rollers.

then pack up and head home,

IT DOESNT GET MORE TRUE THAN THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great stuff.

Wouldn't it be something to have a forum stand there? Loads of people from all around the country, and others on occasion, having a stand there would really spread the word

Great pics Andy, thanks for posting
John Chapman

Minor1PJG

Absolutely fantastic.

I would love to go again (I've only been once) - a forum stand sounds like a great idea!! Put me down for manning it at least one day!!

Maybe an additional event to add to the Southern Meet Ups?!

EDIT: Just submitted an exhibitors enquiry form, and if GDSF are interested we will be sent an application form to exhibit

The Moors Valley pics are great Andy. Thanks Mike for taking them When I visited (3 or so years ago now) they had a Tinkerbell Rally and all the Tinkerbell engines were running along with a few visiting ones

It is one of my ambitions to exhibit the portable layout at least once at the GDSF, I will move heaven and earth to be there!!
bessytractor

my predecessor on my black five used to drive Talos when he was an MVR driver. I saw the GWR Bridget "Cygnus" and the black Conway "Charlotte" at the Bishop's Lydeard steam fair!

kudos to 10 year old Alex Webb for a good little steam plant.

I like the triple!
Graham-Jilly

great vids Andy loved every minute
Titan

Right, I am very seriously interested in going to this next year with the portable railway layout.

MTA, if you need any support or help in your application let me know.

To everyone else, I will try and get a large caravan with awning so that there should be some provision for accomodation - but it is likely to be limited !!

Good Luck!!
