Great run with my SL1Had the morning of, and the house to myself with my little boy, so decided to crack out the SL1 - it ran absolutely brilliantly, hauling the mandatory open truck and log truck, but also some old rolling stock (brake truck, open truck, tender) that I use for one of my Bowmans. These were loaded up with apples and the odd sweet for Daniel to pick off - he cranked out his Thomas gear as well

That's a great runner Moose!
They are Mamods best creation, and heaps of fun. How anyone can not like them is criminal

I agree! It's one of my three Mamods...I have the SL1, the TE1A and my '46 SE1, and they're all keepers.

Great to see you having fun and teasing your son with sweets as they go past him.

Mamod loco's are awesome*
*When they work and haven't been kitbashed by an idiot / left to corrode in fuel tablet fumes / been quality controlled in the mid eighties / undertaken mystery trepaning on their boilers / fueled by petrol soaked rags / been through the hands of sandra-steamandmini / flown off the rails into a pond / etc
Glad it works well! And impressive strength too

I was pleased when the Forum came back online to see this Posting, and an arrival from Royal Mail has just made me make a video in response (will post shortly when uploaded, etc.).
Your loco is now running well Odilon. I recall you saying that it is now a meths burner. Are you using a commercial burner, or have you made up your own?
As for the excellent documentation most of the credit must go to those that originally produced them. I only updated the SL1K instructions, with help from Peter Longfils to complete the graphics & turn it into a PDF file.

Chris, it is a burner I bought from Forest Steam during STiA, with some of MamodFan's superwick.

Good to see another SL1 in action!
Those sweets were going past at a fair old lick too! How do you actually stop a Mamod Loco when it's running close to derailing speed? I ran my IP Jane with the Cab off when I'd refitted the boiler after painting it to test for any leaks.
The regulator lever was fouling some of the pipework so I couldn't get the fine control, it got up to scalextric speeds....and I was too scared to grab it and go up in a orange fireball of butane! It finally came out of warp drive after about 20 laps of the garden, clearly an excellent bit of track laying, it really takes those 4ft radius corners like a straight!

I love your sons faith!
"its gonna fall off the rails in a minute"
I see you have some old Lima O scale stuff, I have the same brakevan, only repainted and given metal wheels. Its good stuff.

Another benefit of this wick material that has not been openly published here, having discussed it with MTA & Titan at the recent Merstham show, is that it seals the wick tubes. Thus when you have a rollover with a loco (hardly a manoeuvre encountered with stationary engines) it prevents the meths from leaking out and starting a fireball. I've had a few rollovers since using this wick material, and have managed to just pick up the loco and send it down the track again. Previously I would be putting out the fireball with water or a damp cloth.

I have a decent pair of gauntlets that are tough enough to pick an engine in steam up by the boiler and hold it for a few seconds....they've gotten me out of a pickle more than once, especially with my Bowman locos which tend to run away something chronic....there was one occasion where my 300 jumped the track, pegged it down the length of the kitchen and wedged itself under a kitchen cupboard, wheels still spinning furiously.
Of course, with Daniel present I take no chances and run more conservatively.....even so, the "log truck" left the rail and got pulled along shaking and rattling for a couple of circuits, to his delight. He has a slight obsession with all things Thomas, so he's very familiar, with the concept of troublesome trucks......
"Oh! Oh! Oh!" cried the Troublesome Trucks...
"Oh come along! Oh come along" puffed Percy

I've stopped using these lumber wagons for my trial runs for exactly the same reason. I think they could really do with some sheet lead weight hidden under the bottom logs to increase their weight a bit more.

I think I'll remove the "lumber"....it's dog ugly anyway. I'll replace it with some real wood, that'll give the engine something to pull as well.
Do you happen to know if the Mamods will run reliably on old Hornby tinplate track? I've got shedloads of that!

no they derail all the time!

I recall reading somewhere that the Mamod wheel flanges were not compatible with Hornby 'O' Gauge track. I think it was something to do with the backs being too thick for the level crossings, points & check rails. I'm sure a little experiment will prove it or not - sorry but I've got no Hornby track to try it out on.

the Hornby tinplate is actually overgauged, more like 33mm as opposed to the correct 32mm
Mamod made the locos wheels way too scale so as you can imagine when I tried it, I had a pretty miserable time.

Ah, I'll have a go next time I run a Bowman.....I actually prefer the old Gamages/Bing track I've got for that, but it's very similar to the Hornby stuff

With the upgraded wheels it's very very difficult to derail it. Unless you open the throttle at full pressure then it may fall off. But can't stress enough how good the upgraded wheels are.
Obviously having something to pull helps too!

Lovely film
I had my SL1K running a few weeks back (at GMES meeting) and I'd forgotten how much fun they are. Because I have to lay out the track it is never a "quick steam up" but I might set mine up again this weekend

Mooseman, just been watching your video with the gas conversion. Do you have the standard boiler or have you upgraded that or anything else as well?
