Greetings From MinnesotaThe Twin Cities, to be exact.
I bought my very first steam engine nearly 30 years ago, when I was but a lad growing up in Singapore. If memory serves, it was a Wilesco stationary engine. Can't remember what happened to it, though, but I do recall having fun with it.
Fast forward to the present, which finds me living and working in the Twin Cities. For some reason, I was bitten by the steaming bug again, and in short order found myself in posession of a couple of new Wilesco steam engines--a D14 and a D455--courtesy of eBay. I've fired up the D14 and it runs like a top, but I've yet to raise steam on the D455.
In any event, I stumbled across this forum through a Google search, and found it to be a wealth of information about the hobby. I hope to learn more about steaming from the experienced members here, and perhaps meet some of you who might be domiciled locally.
Best regards to all!

Gentlemen,
Thanks much for your warm and generous welcomes. I feel right at home already! It is indeed cold here in Minnesota and much of the midwest--this morning's temperature was a balmy -9ºF (-23ºC). I hope it's warmer where the rest of you are.
I'm glad to see we have other Minnesotans aboard; do you gents occasionally get together and talk steam engines?

It was -20 down here this morning (-13 right now).
Have you been to any full size steam shows? There doesn't seem to be any small scale shows around here, but you can find them running in the sheds at the big engine shows.
What part of the Cities are you in? I do a lot of work up there.

Welcome to the forum, from Singapore, the land of your childhood.
If you ever find yourself back here, let me know - we'll have a beer and a steamup.
-23 you say? Brrrr.... that's a wee change from Singapore.

Ya! You betcha!
The only "hot dish" I know of is whatever comes out of a microwave.
I haven't checked the weather report, but it would not surprise me one whit if it were actually warmer in Anchorage right now. My outdoor thermometer currently reads -1°F (-18°C).
(Okay, I just checked: it's currently a balmy 29°F in Anchorage, AK. Time to call my travel agent to book a flight there for my annual tropical vacation!)

Hello, Nick.
Nope, I have not attended any steam shows of any size up here. Where would I find information about such shows in MN?
I'm located just south of the Twin Cities, in Apple Valley. What kind of work do you do up here, if you don't mind my asking?

This is the best website I have found for show listings,
MN:
http://www.farmcollectorshowdirectory.com/event/state/id/MN
IA:
http://www.farmcollectorshowdirectory.com/event/state/id/IA
(I listed IA, because there are a few shows in northern IA)
There's a pretty good show in Hastings, and there was a guy with some Wilesco engines and fairground accessories the last couple of years:
http://www.littleloghouseshow.com/index.php?id=antique_power_show
And there's also a big show in Rollag, but it's a long drive. I left my house at 2:30 am to get there by 7am (You're a little closer)
http://www.rollag.com/
(Forum member KevinKlein has attended that show along with forum member Spencer (but he hasn't posted much))
His 2 posts are here:

Most of the shows are in August/September, so they're a little ways off.

Road construction (concrete breaking), so you probably don't like me working near you!
(If you see a lot of belly dump trucks with a red cab and a yellow trailer, I'm probably in the same area)

Hi, Kevin!
Yup, was born and raised there, did my mandatory 30 months of National Slavery... er, I mean Service, came stateside immediately thereafter for university, got a job and decided to stay.
Thanks for the invite. I seldom return to Singapore nowadays, but if I do, I'll be sure to look you up!
I read in another thread that you've been in Singapore for over 13 years. Have you decided to settle down there?

I'm starting to wish I'd bought a Wilesco instead of a Mamod.
Maybe you should migrate to Australia in the winter. It's about 25 degrees celsius here.

Let's see, for the metric-challenged (i.e., me), 25°C works out to 77°F. That's, um, perfect.
Do you happen to have an unoccupied spare bedroom that I could rent for part of the year?

A warm welcome from Richard and Andrew in the US Virgin Islands.
The Wilesco's look great! Have you fired them yet?
