GWR Mogo wagon modelSlight misjudgement in scale i think !!!!!!!!!!!
Only joking it is the start of my 7.25 inch gauge class 20 project. I have started with my riding truck. The loco will be powered by four 24volt motors and should be able to pull 28 adults with ease hopefully. Below is a photo of the loco as preserved which is what the loco will depict.
Many thanks colin porter

I just went to my local miniature railway today for the first time in 14 or 15 years with my son and he loved it.
They run 7 1/4 inch gauge trains there too.
Will look forward to your updates.
Is this a kit build or a scratch build loco?
|

The whole project is going to be scratchbuilt. The riding truck underframe is from a kit with a home built body. The loco will have bought motors gears and the wheels have been bought as it was cheaper than buying the raw materials . I am currnetly doing the cad design for all the loco parts and hopefull should get the files for the bogies sent off for lazer cutting. I am part of a local club which owns a 7.25 inch gauge railway in the back garden of an old peoples home.
Many thanks colin porter

Big project then, will watch this space with interest.
I'm hoping within the next year or so to start to build a 45mm live steam loco from plans and castings but need to improve my metal working skills first.

I will enjoy and learn from watching your progress reports here, Colin.
That's great for all involved at your group's railway place.
The elderly must adore the train activities.
Is a bit of humour OK? I don't mean to be in bad taste, but I am.

Old People's Home overlooking the garden railway:
Fred blows steam, crotchety: "My train is late, positively late, again."
Attendant: "And you're without a ticket. Polite words aren't needed, Mr. Darby.
A bowel movement is a bowel movement, though you can call it as you wish."

class 20 are great engine, they have quite a few at Barrow Hill. at the Barrow Hill Diesel gala selabrating class 20, they had 20 class 20 and a coupla of other class.
Class 20 do have a really nice sound, and it sound even better when you stick your head out of the cab while it going along.
At the santa steam gala at barrow hill they had a class 20, witch i maniged to get into the cab off and have loads of rides. (i know i am ment to be a die hard steam fans) but it was cold.

I went down to the south devon railway in october to measure up the real thing I used 20110 as she is near to D8000. Some minor differences with bogies and bits but same overall

bet that took a while
andy i dont think that a class 20 would have ever been used to haul the royal train
its now done by a class 67 royal diamond

Just heard my frames are on their way from the lazer cutters later this week for the riding truck. Just need to design some axelboxes and springs now.

I totally agree they should put an area where you can work out the postage when ordering

A copy of the original drawing done for the 12 ton van. This will be used as my riding truck for driving the loco. Can finally start when my frames arrive for assembly later this week from the lazer cutters.
Images from here there is loads mode variants of wagons along with locos and coaches. http://www.greatwestern.org.uk/loco_draw.htm Use the menu on the left to find the different drawing pages also handy for keen model makers.

ah yes they have a pretty good reputation.
I built a BR 20 ton brake van in 5" gauge using Compass House wheels, their service was a bit naff tbh.

My dealings with compass house seems ok. I ordered a motor and gears from them for this project and it was here two days later.

Laser cut wagon frame parts arrived.
A photo of all the parts together so far.
I can start to assemble the riding truck now which will be exactley like this

Never said they would pull a royal train, but that what 4 white disk ment. The disk were put in diffrent configeration for difrent train. So if it was a stoping freight they would be put in up in a certain way. if it was an express pasenger then they would be lpaced difrently. I just rember that 4 disk mean it a royal train. they were so that the signalman new what type of train it was

Thats true and behind each white disk was a light for night running thats what the hole that makes them look abit like eyes is for.

that was enough for me.

The guy from compass house seems ok. They never seem to attend big model engineering exhibitions anymore though which is a shame. Anyway back on topic as I said earlier in the thread the frames are here from the laser cutting people. The will be rivitied together and brazed for extra strengh. Then i need to make some bearing blocks for the bearings to be carried for the wheels to run, some leaf springs which from photos and trhe drawings have a very large curve in them . Then I need to make come couplings and buffers before I start on the body framing. After the body framing I will put the wood into the body work and then use an aluminium roof so it holds my weight and does not add extra weight toi the riding truck.
Many thanks colin porter

have you considered a wooden roof? My brake vans roof is made of thin ply and it supports my ample weight well.
You can get axleboxes from Doug Hewson can't you?
|
colinjamesporter
|
To be honest I hadn't thought of a wooden ply roof it would be easier and lighter to make, thanks for the idea. I have not heard of Doug Hewson do you know if he has a website?

http://www.the-hewsons.demon.co.uk/
have a look through the sub menus. Obviously its not cheap BUT if its a scale model your after then this is the stuff to buy.
Make sure the ply is laminated, so about three layers of wood. This means less chance of distortion.

Above is the corner joiners these will be rivited inside the bufferbeam and solebar to hold it together
The bufferbeams which have been soldered and cleaned up
Show the test fitting of the bufferbeam castings these will be fitted last I just wanted to see how they looked

this is looking good colin, very good indeed. If you keep this up it will be a model worth seeing. Its certainly looking a bit more scale than my brake van
and I implore you to visit the Strawberry line with your 20 and van. They have scale freight trains and they are building a hump marshalling yard, you'd love it.
Oh and they have huge amounts of diesels.......and a 20.......in RF grey

Sounds really good. Will look more into that when i get the locomotvie complete. No more done today. I attended a local model railway exhibition and purchased a JH Russell book on great western wagons and their loads as their is a number of phortos of the type of wagon i am building.

I just looked at the starwberry line site and unfortunatly it seems to be 5 inch gauge Howevery I am looking to take the locos to AGMs with the 7.25 inch gauge society in future years.
