have we been burning the wrong stuff?Look at this. No need to make a still just invest in batteries.

I believe it is the chemicals from the batteries, but what a neat trick!
I was watching some thing on TV where water boiled in a microwave can be heated to the point that any contact with something cool will cause an explosion, the guy showing that was demonstrating Superheated steam power. IT caused a big enough explosion to destroy the Beaker that the water was in and scalding hot water went for some distance. This was done in a controlled situation, the guy was wearing a special suit and there were other safety precautions. Real cool ( or should I say Hot ) demonstration.

I saw that on mythbusters, if you put purified water in the microwave it will not boil. Instead it will get really hot and if you touch it it will cause a dramatic boil.dangerous.
the chemicals in teh batteries did the work but I am going to try that even though it says not to.

I'd like an explanation as to why sliced white onions put in the microwave will arc, spark, and otherwise char in places.
I remember a neato vis in first year chem where they put each of the alkali metals into water and burnt them. I think they stopped at potassium, as the reactions were getting increasingly more violent with each metal...unless it was cesium that blew the beaker apart...
Also they heated a diamond up white hot with a torch and put it in a glass of LOX and it just floated there, happily burning up in a pool of the stuff at few hundred degrees below zero.

Well, I'm cynical... notice the break between the removal of the batteries and the lighting of the "water"? MAYBE the liquid in the glass isn't water at all? Maybe something like methyl alcohol fer instance?
Naw... the internet folks would never try to put something over on us would they?

Here's another vid that I saw recently and has pretty much been discussed and debunked... Note - no wires attached to anything inside the cell...

Anyone tried it?
Seems doable, as hydrogen could be forming, but you'd think that would float off, definitely not burn so slow.
If it does work, I have an idea for heating the pool up.
Throw a few car batteries in it, then light it up

... actually, it's the acid fumes burning. Neat trick, though! Another good one is: 1 cup of water, and 2 teaspoons salt. Connect 2 wires to the + and - poles of a 9 volt battery. Put the wires into the liquid, make sure they don't touch eachother. At one end of the wire you'll see bubbles of pure oxygen rising, double amount of bubbles at the other: Hydrogen. Put a little chemistry phial into the water and catch some hydrogen. Close the phial with your thumb. Light a match, hold it to the opening (remove your thumb!) and poof! The hydrogen goes off. Don't try this on a bigger scale, or you'll blow up the house.
Cheers, mates!

I would say fake.
Hydrogen is lighter than air so if any electrolysis took place it would of floated away.
Also hydrogen doesn't burn with an orange flame, its either clear or pale blue

not yet but I will probably do it later today and fill you in.All you need is a cup of water and 2 "AA" batteries.I got alot of homework to do since I'm in the advanced classes.

well I tried it and it DID NOT work. I dont know why, maybe the batteries were wrong? in the video it had energizer and I used duracell. I left them in for abotu 43 minutes so it had plenty of time.
Maybe some of you should try it, Oh yeah I used water strait from the tap not from my fridge like in the video.

Ranger, forget it, it's not worth the effort. Try the experiment I mentioned a bit above - that at least works and is scientific. Be careful, though!
Kind greetz, Tom
