Hello allHello everyone
I'm Mike. I was recently bought a TE1a for my birthday and there has been no going back. This steam stuff is addictive isn't it? I've just got myself a SL1, an old one I think? from ebay, with a log carraige an open carraige and some track (though not enough for a layout or circle. It goes like the clappers.
Would anyone know how old it is?
The SL1 came with the solid fuel burner, is it worth investing in a meths burner?
I'll ty and attach some photos.
Anyway I've had a look at your forum and you all seem like a nice bunch so I've joined. Lovely to meet you all.

Hi Mike, welcome to the forum! You've come to the right place, and I'm sure one of our many resident experts will ID your engines for you shortly.

Hello Mike, and welcome to the forum! Yes, this steam stuff is very addictive.. the more you have the more you need!
As Mooseman said, one of the Mamod experts will soon give you more info on your engines, which look very nice indeed!

Blimey, that sounds familier! I got a TE1a in January, and I have just bought a SL1!
It is addictive. I also have an SR1a (although not got my hands on that properly yet), and a pop-pop boat (get one, only a couple of quid).
I've spent a blinking fortune! Going to slow down with the purchases now though as I think that is a nice selection of mobiles and I find them more interesting than the stationary engines.
Welcome to the forum. I have certainly found a lot of good information over the last few weeks. People are ready to answer questions and it is a very active board, with some healthy banter along the way.

Welcome Mike,
Steamer from INDIANA USA here...you are in the company of fellow addicts, it's OK...it's not that big a problem (til you bump the wife's china from the cabinet to replace with steam...they seem to find a problem with that!!).
cheers,
Roger

Mikethebaggie, welcome to the forum!
Your first post, above? It should be a model for newcomers.
The TE looks excellent...I don't know much about locos but your
photos are really great. Please pardon my American forwardness,
but "mikethebaggie"...what's it mean?
I hope we'll be hearing more from you, Mike!

Hi Mike and welcome aboard!
Your loco the SL1 dates from the early 80's! and as you said will run like the clappers . Buying a meths burner will give you a much better performance as will an uprated safety valve .
Also its nice to see that you like Football, good so see we don't have another Liverpool supporter
Went up to WBA 2 seasons ago when we were both in the big time 2-2 was the result I'm a Palace fan by the way

Hi Mamodman. Thanks for the info. I was at that match good team Palace.
G'day Wallace
Oldstuff you might by now have figured out the meaning of mikethe baggie. I am a supporter of West Bromwich Albion Football Club, whose nickname is The Baggies. They got this name because supporters back in the 19th century would turn up at matches straight from work wearing the baggy trousers worn to protect them in the iron foundaries of the Black Country. So theres a steam connection for you.
Indiana Rog yes, we have a dresser in the kitchen and my engines have taken up residence on top - gently nudging the wifes pot plants to one side.
Chris I think steam will be an expensive mistress but one who will offer much pleasure
Steve you are in Leeds near my home town of Bradford. hello
Mooseman cheers for being the first to reply

Cheers, Mike! Not a clue until your reply, mate. But, I could discuss the Detroit Lions,
it's just that no one wants to!

Hi Mike,
As MM said get yourself a meths burner and an uprated safety valve and you will see a huge improvement.
There are other upgrades you can do but they are not nesacary to start off with.
One of the best things about Mamod locos are they are so customiseable you can buy replacement / upgraded parts for pretty much the whole loco, from wheels to cylinders, regulators boiler, about the only part you cant buy off the shelf to upgrade them is new bodywork.
You can see my Mamod in my Avatar and in the next few months it will be going through another upgrade as I just got a better quality regulator of MM for it.

A big welcome to add to the rest Mike.
I really hope you enjoy the forum and your new hobby.
It is addictive, but so enjoyable and cash consuming.
Wierd diseases can be caught here like Bowmanitis.
All are known to cause serious damage to the wallet.
Any questions you have, or indeed any help you need, you'll find it here.
Hope to talk steam with you soon.

How did you win? How did Belamy score? Barca have been on poor form lately. The return leg will be difficult, winnable though! As they need 2

I have given it a good clean polish and oil and I'll put another pic up whenits done. My next purchase is going to be a lot more track and then the meths burner.
James, isn't it interesting how just thinking about West brom immediately brings things like pop pop boats to mind?

Zero interest in something that wizzes about making a great noise, only costs a few quid and runs for ages on a few drops of olive oil?
I still maintain everyone should have one

I bought one of the first lot of PPB's that James got, I fire it up at every show I go to to keep viewers entertained whilst I steam up one of the bigger engines

No interest, zero, zilch, none at all, devoid of pop pop boat interest . . .

I feel ya, Mike(oldstuff using modern slang). But, I seem to remember hearing
about a guy trying to make a real, full-sized pop-pop boat. I wonder if he succeeded...
|
James

I doubt it. The law of them working states that they won't work over a certain size, I'm sure.

There are some pretty big ones using multiple units.
I have visions of a full size dinghy fitted with a few hundred pop pop motors A central fuel supply and ignition system would be required to get them all working together. Priming them might be a problem, though
|
oldstuff

I did a search but couldn't find anything...I was probably thinking about a guy
who's making his own full-size steam boat, and confused it as being a pop-pop.
Still, wouldn't it be cool if it could be done? You wouldn't have to buy petrol,
maybe there would be Wax Stations on the docks.
