i want to build a scratch verticle boiler with fire compartment at the bottom and a chimney some where.
Ive scratch built a few small boilers SE2 for example but would like this to be a bit bigger.

Hi and welcome to the forum.
Have a look at this thread as its all about books to build toy steam engines.
If you want to build a vertical boiler I would recommend the book 'Building Simple Model Steam Engines' by Stan Bray and its a quiet reasonable price.

caps off please.  You are internet shouting

here are the threads about the two big engines I made.  The first engine has videos of it running.  The first link takes you to my single acting engine, the second link being the double actor.

OK Don't kill this next suggestion at birth but...

I did notice while I was searching ebay under shells-militaria ? there is a nice selection of brass cartridge shells at a very affordable price.

It occured to me that some of these could be carved up to manufacture various components for a scratch build. Boilers flues etc.

And clearly there is no issue with pressure given their previous application and I think it would quite cool to make a scratch build from a ww2 shell they even have some fired from a spitfire... if you're the sort of person who would name an engine they built (I would) then 'firing the spitfire up' on a sunday morning definitely  does it for me
good luck anyway

not a bad idea there.  Certainly a safe medium to build them out of (assuming the explosive is all gone )

Quite, given my geographic location the postman might raise an eyebrow delivering it. Although given his performance recently somebody may very well suggest that one of those up his  ***** is precisely what he needs.

While out at work he put my black vht which was supposed to be special delivery in my wheelie bin and put a note through the door notifying me. It was bin day!!

Scorpion Vertical steam engines (Australian bard) made directly after the war were initially made from war surplus shell casing and I think Burnacs were too so it has been done on a commercial scale before.
They did use unfired shells but even fired shells I would think would withstand the small pressures used in toy steam engines

I have an old Tank Shell that is rather thick walled, I bet it would taek a long time to heat up. the thing is probably 8 inch diameter.

This is a Scorpion engine and it was made from a war surplus shell.
Just to add to the war history of this engine, the original owner of this engine was KIA in Vietnam.
The parents then gave this engine to his best friend who I purchased it off.
So the main part of this engine was originally made to kill people and then was instead turned into a child's toy. The child then grew up and was killed by another war......
