Here's what the tax refund bought...

This week I got a Box in the post.

It was a Big Box
It had printed upon it "Jensen Manufacturing Company"  In large friendly letters.

I opened the Big Box
There was paper.  Lots of paper

Inside the Big Box was a Littler Big Box (and a spare part)

The Littler Big Box also had Large Friendly Letters printed upon it

Inside the Littler Big Box was paper

Lots and Lots of paper!

I removed it, and paused to read the comics before taking the next picture
What, oh What could it be?

Why...... It's a Jensen Model 95G!

A symphony in wood, and brass, steel, and alloy

The gears make it look more like a watch than a toy

...ah, I'm all out of half-assed verse.  Here's the rest of the photos

Videos to follow in this thread.

I knew you would get the turbine bug. First the empire and now this beast.
IndianaRog

Nice Mark...very nice.

You will find that immersion heater version is probably the most perfect means of heating a boiler full of water and the turbine is in a class of it's own (literally when compared to Wilesco or Empire turbines).

How many Jensen's now reside in your abode???

I am sooooo jealous, that one is a beauty.
Minor1PJG

That really looks special.

I wonder how it will sound compared to your Wilesco T90 - that sounded like an Aircraft.

I can't wait
bessytractor

I love it, it makes the Wilesco one look utter...well....
bigal

Very very nice

How many Jensens?...

Well, I have every engine made today except for the 60 (not counting the 50, since it's not made even though it's listed), plus the oldies...

Model 5, model 20, 3 classic 25's, a modern 25, a 45, 55, 65, 2 70's (and 2 more coming for a project), a 75, one or one and a half 85's (one in pieces, and one on the 65), the 95G, and a 100 work shop and several 15 generators.

I'm looking for a Model 10 - virtually any era of direct-drive power plant.  I'd say a 50 also, but I have to be realistic that I am not likely to find someone selling a 50 who would accept installments over the next 2 years...

Ah, the videos~

Very first run.  Very first time the throttle has been opened.  I did not wait long enough and so there is not enough pressure.

--- By the way.  Has anyone noticed that on youtube there is now a High Quality setting at the bottom of the player?  Video quality is vastly improved if you use it ---

And with the generator.  I notice it's the lower voltage bulb in the generator.  Maybe that's what they ship with these days?

It's a shame that the noise overwhelms the camera's mic.  You really don't get a good impression of the noise.  And while the mic chops off the high end you can still hear the gears clashing at the low end.

The Wilesco T90 has a nice sound too, but overall the 95G is a nicer package.  As I run out of space I am going to have to decide whether or not the T90 fits in my agglomeration of engines.

I do love that immersion heater.  Heats faster than my knackered old kettle, certainly.  I am definitely going to have to consider at least one of those new boilers for my Model 20.
Graham-Jilly

wow they really scream
steamyman

great machine there Mr O, but what else would you expect from Jensen !

sounds reminds me of the jets in 80s film- Top Gun.
Wallace

That's brilliant MR O.

Very nice engine. Well done
Les

That's great, thanks for showing us. Thumbs up!

Magic Vid.

Top class.

I do like the Jensen turbines, so much more solidly built than the other ones out there. Do you think it has more torque than the other Jensens engines with the gearing down?
johnreid

I watched the two videos and still wonder why they do not come up with some sort of clutch mechanism to engage/disengage the generator on the G models. I think that would be a great idea, and maybe a future project, but I bet Mark or Ranger tackle it first.
IndianaRog

There's that sound we all love...thanks Mark, I needed that at 8:10 am to wake me up!!!

John, I have thought a clutch would be nice as well, but would add to the complexity and of course the cost.  I have often thought an idler pulley setup might work for many of our engines with permanent generators so as to release the generator load at will and let the engine (turbine) reach greater rpms.  Yup, we'll just have to wait and see if Mark or Ranger are the first to come up with such a setup!!
tmuir

Easy to do with a couple of Meccano rubber wheels to make a friction clutch. I'm sure I have plans for one somewhere.
Mister Occlusion

I've not run it enough yet to get an idea of the power it has, but it easily runs the generator from a standard flywheel - same as the one on the model 25/75/70/65/60/etc, so it must have a good bit of torque.  Hands down way more powerful than the Empire, and I am of the mind that it outclasses the T90 as well.

I've been tossing around the idea of some sort of clutch, but I'm just not sure how to execute it.  An idler pulley sounds like a very simple and completely workable idea, however, though you might need a double length spring belt to ensure that it's slack when disengaged (but not so slack that it falls off).

....oh, I just had a notion for a disengagement system... One more item to add to the Small Parts Source order that I'm dreaming up.

Geez, I had better get that put in soon so I have parts for summer.
seven.mpd

Nice purchase !!!
James

shit me! That's rate good!
Griffin

Mark, I also had a feeling you had a 95G in that box

Great pic's and video's, love the sound they put out.  Those pic's are the first I have seen of a 95G up close, I hadn't realised the transmission was quite so complex, it's testament to Steve's adept engineering skill's to come up with that set up.
