Highly Recommended book for Steam FollowersI bought this book a couple of years ago but have only just got round to reading it. Here are the details:
'How Steam Locomotives Really Work' by P.W.B. Semmens and A.J. Goldfinch and published by the Ofxord Univeristy Press
ISBN No.: 0-19-860782-2
362 pages including pictures, diagrams and tables in B&W, Paperback. RRP: £9 (not bad at all for the book it is)
This book is all about the science behind steam engines. Mostly about railway engines (hence the title) but a lot of it also applies to Traction Engines, Stationary Engines and the like. I blame this book for all that science behind calrofic values and grate areas in Jim's thread about one of his many projects in the GD board.
The book starts off with how steam came about from the days of Watt and Newcomen and leads into Richard Trevithick's invention of his self propelled rail bourne 'Pennydarren' loco. Then it leads onto such things as braking systems, valve gear, different fuels and everything really that is considered before starting to build a steam engine whilst in the design stage. So if you see this book, GET IT! The cover has a picture of the centre driving wheel of LNER A3 Pacific No. 4472 'Flying Scotsman'.
MTA gives it a 10/10
