Home made loco (kind of) don't laugh please

Looking at a few mamod spares I have in my box of bits. I thought I would try and make myself a little loco from the bits ive found.

I'm using Rosa's old wheels

A load of meccano that Ive bent and cut! and hacked apart (look away meccano lovers)

This isn't based on any particular loco or anything, I'm not sure it will even work will it? Maybe you guys know more than I do? I'm having two pistons by the way. It all seems to move freely by hand which is quite suprising

I'm using an SE2 boiler which should give me enough power, well more than enough as its bigger than normal mamod loco boilers!

What do you think guys? It aint pretty.....

Will it work?
SPOKESMAN

I think it will try to move - maybe a longer wheelbase!?
Wallace

I think it'll Work MM. Going to be interesting

As mentioned, a bigger wheel base will help.

If all else fails, use the shaving gel in the pic for a fuel for firing

Seriously though, it should work.
Mamodman123

LMAO we'll see. Its only the Mk1 so things are bound to go terribly wrong
tmuir

I'll go with what everone else is saying.
It will work but move the wheels further apart.
Hell if a minor 2 can work a double action cylinder should definately work.
yosa

Don't see why it shouldn't work MM.
MTA

It should work, as the others have said, a longer wheelbase will enable it to move easier. Plus it will share the power from the pistons along the chassis more evenly.
oldstuff

Homebuilt hacking at it's best! I'd love to see the vid when you get 'er done, MM.

LOL

Yeah it should be intersting. I'll move the wheels further apart.

The idea is to use an SE2 regulator to keep the speed down, having the pipe going into the exhaust then through the block and out the exhaust hole when the handle is operated. (He hopes)

She won't be a looker, but I think I can get something out of my spares and make an interesting engine
SPOKESMAN

You'd best get hacking away MM . . . .

Aye hacking a load of rusty meccano and snapping drill bits
Darren

I can't see why it shouldn't be a runner or be it, you'll need to widen the wheel base, centralise the boiler etc etc.

I look forward to it's first run.

As an idea, why not go for two pistons per wheel, as per MF's MM2 Twin

Ambitious to say the least Darren

Yeah I've got some idea's to widen the wheel base, and get the boiler in . Should run, only time will tell I suppose

This is only the Mk I. It will improve as I go along I guess
Chris

What are you going to use for the burner? Sorry if you said and I missed that bit.
James

It should work MM!
mc_mc

That's an expensive counter weight.

Can you take another picture, I couldn't quite read the number of that national insurance card in the background.

I can't see why it wouldn't work though, if you can get the wheels to turn slowly enough!
Mamodman123

Done a bit more on it tonight. got both pistons on now! Both turn freely and all looks good! Ive taken the wheels apart more so it will be more stable!

Ive made the boiler supports and made a tray for the burner!

Not sure what burner i'll use just yet. Will probably make my own

Picture coming up
Mamodman123

Sure is an ugly bugger

Boiler will be taller than that, so I can get a burner under it and some sides to stop the wind blowing it out
SPOKESMAN

Thats pretty differnet MM, unique Id say!

Yes... it's unique alright

Get some soldering done tomorrow, I need a thread for the boiler

Should work.... I hope whether I can get it slow enough is another matter
SPOKESMAN

It'll work!
Chris

Looking good.

I assuming seeing as you have cut and bent the meccano you don't mind burning the paint off it with the burner either.

Looking forward to it running.

Keep the faith

The only problem is the cylinders, they are soldered up to high heaven because they cracked I just hope they hold out ok

Yup! hack saw, drilled, snapped, bent, filed everything

I hope Mr Meccano doesn't see

I'm looking forward to it too Chris! will be interesting anyway
SPOKESMAN

No, i'll stick with it Mike
bessytractor

I love it!!!

but you may want to widen the wheelbase as everyone else has said, and I'm not thinking extra traction, I'm thinking wheelies!!!

reversing valve?
Wallace

I just caught up with this thread after my lost posts.

Looking good MM
steamyjim

pretty sure she will work

i love unusaul locos like that!!!

Got the two steam pipes soldered on.

Just got to solder the boiler, then place that on, attach the steam pipe and regulator, build firebox sides...

Coming along, the nasty work is done now

I'll get some pictures later
Minor1PJG

Not sure if you have seen this chap's Loco creation based on a Wilesco D14. Very interesting build and also his endeavours to build a Mamod based garden railway make entertaining reading too.

Your Loco will be great!!

It's not improved too much, just had a couple of pipes soldered on. The boiler isn't useable so I can't attach it yet
steamyjim

MM you got any further with it??
Graham-Jilly

the suspense is terrible - have you got any further? G-J
Mamodman123

No not yet, it's been put to the back of the pile while I get the 101 sorted and some more

It will get done eventually i'm sure

Any progress???

Or have you given up?
James

I think them cylinders are now on Poppy LOL
steamyjim

Poppys got uprated cylinders though ant she?
James

They are upgraded cylinder I think!
steamyjim

Yeah but the cylinders on MMs loco are standard arent they?
James

Aye! And they ain't off an MSS loco
steamyjim
