Looking good. How does the meths capacity compare with the pps ones?
|

thanks guys i ran it in marvin this afternoon im very impressed kept up the heat and marvin flew.
this is a pic of the additions. I added a 1/8" copper tube for filling and a large breather that ill put a small plug into, I found I needed this so I could fill it properly from the pipe. it holds 25 mills of meths and burns for about 10 mins. still need to work out how to screw it in place but at the moment its a tight fit and stays in place
and here is a small vid of it burning
and when the rain stops ill vid it in marvin

Looks good Graham, maybe if you put a right angle section on the front it would hang under the sight glass in the cab. There is a small gap there that you could slide the burner into. Hard to explain.
|

|
well the back of it hangs on the two screws that hold the back frame on

Some nice high flames on there.

A flaming success.

Are you making them to buy?

very nice if you shorten the wicks a bit you'll still get the same heat but with a longer run

I'd love to see them burning with a shorter wick.

I made most of that one up from flat brass sheet it was a bit fidly and time consuming. Im trying to source some brass tube here in brisbane but no luck as yet.
it burnt long enough to bring the loco to the boil from cold and stoped burning as the steam was running out soam happy with that

Wow, looks a bit like the Sidestreet one, nice work!
As far as holding it in place, I have found with the sidestreet one that I needed to cut it down to clear the PPS wheel nuts. This, along with the rear buffer beam screws into the frame, give a good pressure fit into the frame, and then the top cover holds it.
Good luck with the project!

So you will make them for sale
Don't make me beg, please

Garrett yess it looks a lot like the sidestreet one as thats where I got my inspiation I had to add the small breather to the top of it otherewise it wouldnt fill properly
MM If i can sorce tubing for them im sure I can manufacture a few for sale . but will need to iron out some small things like mounting etc. wouldnt like it to fall out while screaming round the track
the back part hooks over the two screws that hold the back buffer beam. so maybe ill make the other mount similer to the sidestreet version and have it close off the fire chamber properly. then minimising cabin fires

The Sidestreet one has a bottom vent/overflow. It is a curved bit of brass tubing inside the tank that bends up inside. It discharges in the taper of the sideframe, before the bufferplate, at the very rear of the side of the tank. Works well as the meths are blown out the side (away from the loco and the burner) in case of overflow Vs on the footplate (at flame level inside the loco).
This allows for the Sidestreet mounting bracket to be employed, the bent top plate.
Have you read the info on burners on the Roundhouse site? I found a problem with my wicks from this article I need to address.

Ive just read that article and its very interesting. thanks for pointing it out. now back to the drawing board with my burner I dont want to breach copywrite with sidestreat and their burner tho

I do not think there would be any breach of copyright, ideas are ideas, and if you are unsure about it, just run it by Marc.
Honestly, they are all pretty identical, and Sidestreet took the Roundhouse way of making the burner vent.....they were the one of if not the first RH dealers in the US afterall?

Does it not depend whether they have patened the design?

Paten the design ? As I said, there is nothing proprietary about the design, and if anything, it is safer than the UK made ones due to the design features I listed.
Guys.....if you are worred, just ask Marc:

He is a nice enough guy and has helped the steam hobby in this country for decades.

For bending up the tanks? The rest (lines and burners themselves) should all be tubes.
Interested to see MkII!

Sorry Garrett I bought some tube as well

No apology needed, just pointing it out.
What are you doing about tube orafices? The SS burner has actual gaps in the feed in the base of each tube.
|
Graham-Jilly
|
I use a small drill to drill a hole in the feed tube that way I dont have to cut the tube

wick burnerA good job. A suggestion for next time though is that it is not necessary to silver solder any part of the burner. In this application silver solder has no advantage and if you are using copper in the construction it is left very soft.
The actual burner head of a vaporising burner is the only application I can think of for silver solder on a burner for one of our engines.

Hi Murray welcome to the forum.
the only copper used in this burner is the filler tube
all the rest is brass

You shouldn't really need to silver solder it. Mamod burners are soft solder!

I know i shouldnt need to MM but i still feel safer with it silver soldered its just me beeing over causous

After market loco burners sold by IP and PPS are silver soldered

When you go into production I will have one Graham. Will be a good alternate to running gas. Do you think you could make me some wick covers for my Bowman burner?
|
talluncle31
|
Paul_C mentioned wick covers for a Bowman burner. These are not usually satisfactory, not even the original Bowman ones, as the vapor tends to find a way to blow down through any clearance and you can develop an intense flame directed downwards. Overpacking any wick you do not wish to light will keep alcohol from it, that is the better solution.

I will give it a go and see how it runs. Thanks for the tip.
