Home-made Wilesco D32

H'llo, friends! My new project is slowly making its way from the cunfuddled mess I call my brain to the drawing board: I'm going to try and build a "poor man's" Wilesco D32. I'm going to use 2 D16 cylinder groups, steamed by one single boiler. Au contraire to the genuine D32, both cylinders will be working individually, which I find more attractive. Is there anything I should look out for or keep in mind? Should I use a large boiler, or would the original D16 boiler be enough to power 2 D16 cylinders? Thanks for your help, mates! I'm grateful for all infos, hints and tips you have ...

Sounds an interesting idea.

I would have thought that getting enough heat to the boiler to keep up the pressure would be more of an issue than boiler capacity.

For two double acting cylinders you will need to connect them to a flywheel at 90 degrees (not 180 which it would be for single acting ones like on the SE3).

Have you seen Roly's triple SE3?

Sounds like a good idea, Personally I would go for the bigger boiler possibly a jensen boiler for that extrapower.

Yo, Chris! I dont want to connect the two engines (other than the orig. D32); I want to have them working each one by itself. Throttle one down, while the other one's stampeding, and vice versa, or toute ensemble. How should I superheat the boiler?
Thanks, says Tom

I see. Or you could do it so they could either be connected together for more power, or disconnected so you could control them independently!

Sounds a good project! You may know already ... I LOVE D32s

It wouldnt be possible to connect them because the engines need to be handed (left and right) for the 2 ends of the crankshafts fitted together (if you get my jist)

Keep us informed of the progress , sounds like a most interesting project

Dear Jimmy! I could connect them - just imagine thr flywheels together, cylinders pointing in opposite directions. But I have in mind to have both machine standing next to each other, operating independantly. No combined power, instead more "action", since I could let one idle while the other's blasting away, and vice versa. I'm going to use a Wilesco D455 vertical boiler. The whole thing wil be mounted onto a wooden baseplate. I'll keep you informed! Bought the second D16 machine cheaply off ebay yesterday, so I guess I'm comitted to the project now. By the way, Jim: The other day, a D32 went for 645 Euros! That's like giving it away ...

Tom-

i suggest you buy a boiler from Model Components in Australia. A 2 inch boiler would probably all you need.

Dear Steamy! Thanks for your tip - but I could never afford the costs! Beautiful and sound as those boilers are! Awesome make&quality ... Wow, 450 Aussie Bucks would be around 350 Euros - plus, customs will slap on their 20%, and postage ...
Naaaa, gotta stick to what I can get here in the EU. International am I at heart, but me wee anorexia nervosa wallet says: behave yourself, you've got bills to pay!
Oh, well ...
Cheers, mate

Hi toxx,

In the background is an antique fire extinguisher I picked up. It's 3 inches in
diameter by 11 inches long. Maybe you could find something like that?
