Homemade workshop 1st run SE3 powerOk, here's the vids.
First vid is just after engine started running
This is closeup of Workshop running
Now under full steam
And no SE3 vid would be complete without throttle play. Gotta love the burns
Overall, very happy with it. Power press was a little tricky to get running. Don't think it has ever been used much. Stiff spring. But a little oil got it going
Now to dismantle it, and do the decorative work.
Pics as they happen

Clever use of the Meccano contrate gears Wallace. Are going to 'fit out' the workshop walls and floor?

Thanks Mike. Couldn't remember what that gear setup was called.
Amazing how little the load is using that gearing
Yeah, going to dismantle all fittings, then add some decorative touches
Might replace a couple of pulley's here and there too. Think I'm using one where I should use a collar. Could speed up polisher and grinder too.
But will give it a run with a couple of other engines first.

Re: the power press
I had the same problem Wallace! They are very difficult to get going, I had to cut the spring a bit and stretch and squash it a few times so it would go round with ease, sometimes it can make my whole setup bind.
Very nice BIG workshop you have there Wallace
shame about the hammer facing the other way Wallace, is there any way you could turn it around?

Thanks MM.
At least I'm not the only one with press probs.
I thought the same about the hammer too.
Actually, I only just thought, the large gear I have on the meccano axle?
It's teeth face the engine. Perhaps, if I add a slightly longer axle, and turn the gear over, with it's teeth facing the workshop, that might reverse it.
Picturing it in my mind, it will.
I hope.
Thanks for reminding me mate.
It is a little big. Didn't quite expect it to be so big until I put it all together.
Just think, that's going in the loungeroom when done

Yes that could work Wallace! I hope it does anyway .
Yes I think the press always have problems, I think the brass flywheeled ones would be better as they are heavier! The newer ones have flywheels like cardboard

how about making the drive band so its in a figue of eight, reversing the direction?

Thanks MTA
A great idea, which will probably work. Going to be easier than flipping over contrate gear.
I have to try that.
Thanks again

Its looking good Wallace. The SE3 seems to manage that lot without any problem!

Cheers guys.
The figure 8 drive band worked for running hammer. Thanks MTA.
Tried flipping over contrate gear, but needed slightly more length on the shaft.
Given up on getting the plastic model train brickwork, so I will just use printed out stuff I did. Plastic would be great though
Anyone who is doing such a job, or anything with wood. Don't use MDF board. It's rubbish. First time I've ever used it.
I got the MDF for workshop for free. We got a new chemical shed at work, and those boards were the shelving, but Workcover said we need metal shelving.
The MDF was horrible, and any others I make I'll use pine.
MDF split in the endgrain, even when predrilled. Putting screws in to hold tools/meccano left a ridge around hole and raised the meccano brackets. Even sawing, can make it "tear" a little. Thankfully used the old mans table saw.
I hate MDF. Good for nothing

Sounds good Wallace, I think your SE3 has a lot more umph in it to be honest, you could if you wanted add a few more tools. Maybe a saw? or even a drill?
As for MDF, well. they use it relgiously here in D.I.Y programmes always looks like crap!

I might try see how squeezing a fan and saw (SEL) in there goes cos I don't think I'll sell them.
I'm suprised at how little load there is on the Mamod lineshaft when you spin the shaft flywheel by hand. Honestly feels like there is no load.
I might try it. 2 more, running off existing shaft, or another contrate gear running shaft on a sidewall.
Yeah, that MDF is just terrible. No other words for it. I used it cos it was free, and I'll be covering/painting most of it. But yeah, I should have used pine, or ply at the least

Yes, I have loads hooked up to my SE3 and believe it or not it actually self starts most of the time with all that meccano and tools hooked up to it . The SE3 is mostly underated in terms of power to be honest!
I'm going to add a saw to mine a little later hopefully, will have to find a driveband though
