Horahh! Finally! Finally the Council in Gainsborough has decided to make the town more old looking!!
They are completely tearing up the town centre, and re-doing it all with cobbles
Still no excuse to knock all the other buildings down to build roundabouts and all that other crap!

I love the look of cobbled streets but have you ever tried to ride a bicycle down a cobbled street, you very quickly learn to ride standing up. OUCH!

I remember when they dug up the streets where I lived in Glasgow to replace some pipes, in the open trench you could see about 5 layers or tarmac then a layer of fill and under that these fantastic looking cobbles! They just tarmacked over all the cobbled streets and didn't even remove the cobbles.

You wait until you get yourself a wife, with high heels!
We`ve just got back from Chesterfield, with it`s modern cobbles..... Had the usual earache from SWMBF about twisted ankles/ can`t walk properly etc.
Also most of the kids in pushchairs have wiplash, and many crumblies have broken arms/ ankles/ hips.

Don't you think it's stupid though, how the old Victorians worked bloody hard and got bugger all pay, and now people laze about on checkouts and stuff and they get bloody loads!

Yes but back in Victorian times you could buy a house for £100, now that won't even get you a new mamod loco.

they've redone some of our old Exchange District (the oldest bit of downtown) with those modern interlocking driveway paving stones on the streets here and there, to get a sorta cobbled look to the place. Place I was at today was behind the old rail station, and the back lane behind where the loading dock was had rectangular brick-cobbles all along it. Near the building for about 10 feet they were all covered in a shabby layer of cold pack asphalt... probably because of subsidence (easier to lay on the black top than pay someone to relay all those bricks...)
The old roadway was nice, but certainly not something to drive faster than 10kph on.

Paving Bricks and Cobblestones are very Maintenance heavy, they take a lot of work to keep them smooth enough for High Heels and the sort. That is why asphalt took over, Motor Cyclists like Brick paving when the park their bikes as the kickstands do not sink into the pavement. Well maintained pavers can allow normal city speeds without too much vibration.
