Horizontal/Vertical Steam Engine

Hi All,
It's turned up today! When I got in from school I couldn't wait to get the package open and when I did, I was impressed! I'd paid £30 for what looks like a quality engine, though the boiler is rather crude. I, list the 'pros & cons' of the two major components below.

Boiler & Firebox:
Copper (I think)
Bit crude (not to fussed)
Simple adjustable saftey vlave (if you un-do the top, all the steam'll come out in a sensible manor)
Chunky Firebox
All nut & bolted/screwed
Boiler a little loose in firebox, and can tilt/ move

Engine:
Cast frame
Bearing for the flywheel
Oiling pot for the shaft
Cast flywheel
Ocsillating cylinder
Smooth when turned over
Chunky cylinder (with bolted cover)
Has a ring around the piston
Green ( )

It turned up looking like this:

So I steamed it up and learnt that:
1)It's uses LOTS of water.
2)It has and adjustable saftey valve.
3)I couldn't get it to work!
But of course it needed cleaning!! That'll make it work(?) !
So I dismantled the engine, and checked all the parts and cleaned it. And I must say it now looks rather smart. I'll let you add to that!!!

This is the dismantled cylinder assembly:

The saftey valve exploded, I'll let you find out how it works, as it's so simple:

The engine its self:

The entire thing cleaned up:

Another view of the entire thing cleaned up:

What do you think? Presumaby as the engine frame is cast I guess there is more than one engine made? Anyone know what it is yet? Thanks in advance!

Now all I need to do is get it to work and take some video......

Looks pretty smart! Why doesn't it run?
SillyBilly

Haven't a clue, we'll see if it'll run next when I try it.

Yeah, would be good to see it go if you can sort it can't complain for 30 quid!
Steve_S

It was a great buy at that price. And if it doesn't go there can't be much stopping it. I'm sure you'll be able to sort it out.
MooseMan

Love it - that safety valve's unusual on an engine in this class!
John Chapman

A very nice and an unusual engine. Good luck getting it going.
steamyman

A very impressive engine there. I hope you can get her going.
Wallace

Very nice engine

Look forward to vids when it's running

Check out the video board!

Really interesting find Bill. Got to be some scratch or homebuilder's work in it's history.
I love those kind of engines. If you're sending us to the vids, you must've got running!
