Hot Bowman M101 action!Had a bit of fun tonight - took my big M101 out for a run, and slung three workshops up to it! A combined total of 11 driving models and 3 lineshafts, and the engine barely even noticed.....what a brute, I love it
Workshops consisted of:
1 - Bowman drill and Punch with SEL lineshaft
2 - Wilesco punch, saw, cutter and drop hammer with Doll&Cie lineshaft
3 - Jensen Saw, drill, ripsaw, hammer and planer with lineshaft
You'll notice the movement on the Wilesco setup's a bit jerky....that Doll shaft is HEAVY, and I only had a fairly worn driveband

I've got an ad from a 1931 Meccano Magazine stating proudly that the M101 will drive a full size sewing machine without further gearing....I don't doubt it for a second. If somebody will lend me a nice old manual Singer I'll try it

Not at all sure what they fetch these days....I don't think it is one of the really expensive Bowmans, like the 122. Maybe people are put off by the size...that flywheel's an inch thick, and weighs a pound

Knowing bowman quite high! I'll keep a lookout anyway! I'm not sure what the 122 is, i'll have to brush up on my bowmans

Sorry mate - it's the big twin cylinder (as opposed to the smaller 140)

Yes... so do I. Wood doesn't seem to suit such a large machine, though the smaller ones get away with it.
|
MooseMan
|
I'm not sure why Steve....both my old Jensens are larger than the 101, and they have wooden bases.....maybe I just like the meccano look on the Bowmans (or is it Bowmen) , they have that "bolted together" feel...
|

I think thats it... the Jensens are beautiful objects, and elegant in a similar way to Merseys, but Bowmen look sturdy and purposeful, as if they're here to do some work, not just look pretty.

What a pity it's so shiny.
Puts me right off as I like to be responsible for my engines shinyness.
Had it been tatty I'd have gone a fair whack on it.

Fantastic Vid Mooseman. Great setup of tools too. Got to get cracking on my workshop.
Notice how the hammers always have the distinct sound in the workshop
Does the flywheel really weigh a pound? That's incredible!
I'd hate to pay for postage to OZ

Thanks Wallace!
it's a heavy puppy allright. I did actually post one to the US once....we worked out that the cheapest way to do it was to dismantle the engine and send it as two parcels, so they both stayed below the 2kg cutoff, above which UK postage just becomes ludicrous.
May be one to remember, as long as the seller knows what he's doing....got a nasty vision involving a hacksaw now
PS - my daughter (5) loves your Avatar...she saw it and went "Hey! Ice Age!"

Would you believe I never even considered that?
Maybe there's a new proverb in it:
"half a Bowman's better than no Bowman"

Thanks Mooseman. My daughter loves it too. I'm considering changing it now I have a bit of a unique engine (my boat).
2 parcels is a great idea. Actually a seller did that for me once with a TE1. Box, steering rod, canopy and scuttle in one, TE1 in other. Great idea, though I didn't think of it for a stationary.
