Felt like I was taking a short walk with ya James. The river IS close to your house. Have you ever had it flood the banks and get right up to the house??

Naa, it burst the banks back in the 40's, and they brought a huge steam crane on a boat up from the Netherlands to re-do the banks.
There are several "gymes" ponds where whirlpools from the river gouged great holes into the earth, and one gap that the crane did (I'll have to get a photo). This is a bank, and then like a semi circle of bank behind it. It was either in there or in one of the gymes, but in the war, some soldiers were training on a raft, the raft broke up, sank, and killed all the solidiers.
Also, up on that bank is where the old walkerith ferry used to be. It ran from one side of the river to the other. People used to dig holes and bury their money and valuables and then collect it again at a later date. You still dig up coins and that!
There was also a boat builders yard in the village, on the corner there opposite the farm.
On the corner of the farm that is being renovated (I think it is), there was a huge hotel. It was knocked down many moons ago but there was a murder in it!
There is also a big farm house in the village with all the old stoves, ranges, aqnd even the bells rigged up and working for the servants (on the ceilings). It also has beams!
I live in a village with about 20 houses, and I keep finding out more and more history about it

After all that I still didn;t answer your question
A couple of years ago the water came up to about 2 foot off the bank top... that was real scary stuff then!
The sheer pressure that bank must have been under was incredible.

Interesting stuff...river banks are amazing in how much water pressure they can sustain...but when they let go, you have a New Orleans like mess.

Yep, New Orleans was awful

It's a huge river!!
The Vikings sailed up it, and king Cnut landed at Castle Hills in Gainsborough... just behind my school.

Sorry James got to agree its a creek.
Here is a picture of the Swan River that goes past Perth.
This isn't the widest part but its the part right in front of the city.
This is about 16km from the coast but we still every couple of years get Bull sharks coming up the river past here.
But guarenteed no Viking or Kings have rowed up this river.

Go jump in it at high tide and when you have got sucked down by a currant come back and tell me it ain't a river.
Thought not.

What I didnt say James is we really only have one River in the metro area, everything leads to it and upstream its looking pretty bad.
Saw some of the pictures of floods in the UK in papers here and it looked pretty bad.
Was just winding you up.

NP, I try not to take anything too seriously at all now.
I like my hair and don't want it to fall out with worry.
Catch ya, I'm off to bed now.
