How much water to use??

I have a number of Mamod boilers with no level plug or sight glass.
Has anyone recorded the optimum volume / measure of water required to make good steam vs running time for a Mamod minor 1 or 2 ??

I have also noticed that my SR1a and my SE2a when filled to the level plug overflow point often appear by their poor running to have too much water in them and sometimes start syphoning water through the steam pipes.

Is there a chart of recomended water fill measures for Mamods?? I assume this is an issue on other makes as well??

Any ideas????

i generally just fill them up with a big syringe then take 20% back out.

the scientific thinking behind that is it gives me a reasonable amount to squirt at the dog

Celsius 100

I normally fill to approximately 75% of the total volume of the boiler both for the Minor 1 and 2.Seems to work very well in conjunction with gas firing.

The instructions on my MM2 say "fill ... until the boiler is 3/4 full" -  say 2/3 by depth?

With the simple pot-boilers and wick-lamps I have, meths seems to boil away 3 times or a tad more of its own volume of water, so using 1/4 as much meths as water should be safe for a first run - then measure how much water is left and adjust to leave a decent safety margin of water at the end - around the volume of the original meths fill.

Most pot boilers are happy starting 2/3 - 3/4 full. However, the MM1s that do have a level plug have it at about 1/2 way so maybe it's a bit more prone to priming.
