I believe that Mamod is making a newer line of coaches now

They now are advertising Aluminum Coaches and also have a Tender in the line now. Looks like the RS1 has been replaced with the New Mamod Train too.
I got this in the post with the Sightglass they sent me

Once I am back in the position to be buying things, I want the Tender.
Lighter weight rolling stock, I have to weigh down the steel cars
made-in-england

Tis on there website too
johnreid

Do they advertise anyplace else?
Keith S

I like the Tender, I think the engine looks nicer with one.
alan2525

I'm not too sure about the coaches at all! They have a rather odd window cut-out that's reminiscent of the BR Mk.1 coaches. A much better bet would be the IP Engineering or Brandbright kits.
Titan

I tend to agree. What would you rather spend 60 quid on, this,

Or two of these?

johnreid

I spent 30 and got this

I do want another.
Keith S

Two of those.
metalhead100

John ,

You could get the Aluminum ones and bring them up to weight with a lower center of gravity then....they would track better than a steel one of the same weight....

Lower CG ....good for trains and slot cars 8o)

Yea ......I still have slot cars.......yawn

LOCO

THEY R ADVERTISING THE LOCO AS £169 ON ITS OWN
johnreid

The Loco went up to £199.50 it was £169

Lets do the math
Loco      199.50
Tender    35.00
straights 33.00
curves     33.00
=============
Total      300.50
Or you can buy it as a set for only £375
I think I would buy the things separately, is the box that the set comes in made out of Gold?

I do see that I saved a few pound by getting one early. We all knew the price was going up.
diamondlady

SO WHY IS IT STILL ADVERTISED AT £169 ON THE SITE?
Les

I just went to their website and it is £199.50.

http://www.mamod.co.uk/product_vi...amp;pr=1351%20The%20Mamod%20Train

But the train set isn't on their site yet.
johnreid

It went up approx $50 USD real quick I think it was worth the extra struggle I went through to get mine early. I bet the price goes up again, but still a great product for the money.

But the math still looks like it is cheaper to buy the set in individual pieces as opposed to buying a Starter set. £74.50 cheaper, not a small amount, or will the Loco be going up that much soon?

I am surprised that you do not get any wagons with the set.
johnreid

£74.50 would pay for one. Maybe they meant to include one but changed their minds and forgot to adjust the price.

If you can still get the price, go for it as it really is a great Loco, I think that the first ones were cheaper as us who bought them must the the test and evaluation phase ( Guinea Pigs ) if it had really been bad we would have been the ones to lose. I had a few minor problems, but all in all it is a great running train.

but have not been able to get in touch with them as they dont answer the phone must have finished at 4pm
Les

That's helpful, two different prices on the same website.
made-in-england

if they are still advertising it cheaper than one price they have to sell it to you at the advertised price
johnreid

That makes the Starter set even more overpriced. I like my New Mamod Loco, and to be honest Mamod has been good with trying to help this customer, but there is something wrong with the Starter Set price. many people often buy a set like that thinking that they might save a little money buying a set like that, not to end up paying a lot more.
I think that the right hand does not know what the left is doing, I hate to see it happen as Mamod is a fixture in the Toy Steam Industry.
warwickshiresteam

Why do they call it a train, when they mean Locomotive or engine? I've always hated that.
They wouldn't call a car a bus would they?
diamondlady

IT'S IN THE POST

THEY HAVE now altered the price on the page but not before I got mine at the £169 price!! they have let me have it at £169 but instantly altered the web page!!

Oh and for the starter set you get 2 lot's of curved track so add on another £33... and then how much is the oil and gas adapter?

QUESTION : I have ordered locomotive on its own as I had to put it on my card as vets bill for my dog came to £260+ yesterday but as I dont have another gas train do i need the gas adapter? and what does the gas adapter do ?
I might buy more in a months time but have just ordered Track and
I've spent too much already!!
but I'm now thinking I've got a train coming  and as soon as I take it out the box what will I need to get it running..
What gas bottle do I get? and will I need the adapter?
as I cant find the prce for the adapter  on the mamod web site
can anyone help?
Les

I think this is the right adapter.

http://www.forest-classics.co.uk/gasrefiller.htm
Les

This is the type of gas you need, shop around though for the best price.

Thank you

Thank  you DL (Andrea)
johnreid

They lowered the price of the set too. I do believe they are listening. The adapter Les linked to is right, I bought mine from a Camping supplier that sells the adapter so people can refill lanterns etc with the bigger gas canisters.

THis is what I bought

80/20 Butane Propane mix
diamondlady

If  I go to my local camping shop should I be able to get gas and adapter ?
I know they do the gas as I used to go caravaning but its the adapter Im not sure about?
johnreid

You very well might, I bought mine on Ebay and it is the same make as the Gas canister. The Ebay seller was a camping supply store though,

I'd buy the gas filler at the same time as tho loco.

Go system gas is good, B&Q sell it too. Some of the Butane gas at camping shops doesn't have the threaded valve (like the one in JohnReid's photo) to screw into the gas filler though. Also some of the Butane - Bernzomatic in blue cans tends to block gas jets as it's designed for blow torches and not camping gas stoves or locos.

Also I'd use Butane rather than a Butane Propane Mix, especially as the loco has a plastic sightglass. Propane burns hotter than Butane. Some of the mixed gas has 80% Butane 20% propane, some is 40% Propane.
johnreid

I switched to the mix for two reasons, first, Mamod recommends that one use the mix, and second it is far less expensive.

I also did my home work:
The flame temperature of butane in air is 1970 degrees C
The flame temperature of propane/butane mix in air is 1970 degrees C
The flame temperature of Propane in air is 1980 degrees C

not much difference is there?

Butane does not perform as well in colder temperatures and that is why they do the mix, in the summer where I live, butane will perform identically to Propane or the mix. It doesnt get as warm in the UK so I do believe the best thing to use is the mix for year round enjoyment.

I use 80/20 Butane to Propane and some use 70/30
alan2525

I'm not sure about the figures but propane has a slightly higher calorific value than butane, the pressure of propane also seems to go up dramatically as temperature increases.

I use Butane here in the UK and don't have any problems, unless running at sub zero temperatures. Butane / Propane mix helps to keep up the gas pressure then.
johnreid

THe point being that the mix isnt any worse than pure Butane, I know that when I went to buy, the mix sure costs a lot less. I dont think my sightglass problem was due to the mix. No harm either way
metalhead100

John are these figures correct?.....Celsius ! Are you kidding me ?......

How come i have not destroyed my boilers with my 100% Propane burners?

Does it stay around boiling point temp as long as there is water?......

Confused ......

Jim.......
johnreid

The water does keep them from melting, if you let one run dry you will wish it was silver soldered, I found that info out on several web sites, scientific, not amateur guessers. and I checked it against some text books too.
That fire is HOT, but so is Meths and Esbit too. And as you know, the temperature varies with air supply and some other variables.
Pure Propane is 10 degree hotter than Butane, but how much gas are you feeding it etc. Just think, you use Propane or Butane as far as that goes to solder the boilers with.
