I'm confused!! SEL Major... please help!

Ayup ayup ayup.

My SEL Major that I'm mending for me mate, needs a threaded insert soldering into the steam dome. This will be hard, very hard. But it is made harder by the fact the boiler is covered in gold paint!

Would you..

1) Leave it gold (where some will be burnt/,missing)
2) Take the gold off, shine it up brass.

I'll do a poll!

Ta!
Lewis

i took all the paint of my sel because it just goes black eventually
Wallace

I went for strip the paint. Otherwise the soldering will defo burn the paint off and it'll stand out.
Sandman

If your going to damage the paint anyway, strip and polish.
Mamodman123

Yeah just polish it lad!
MooseMan

Strip it mate - it always gets damaged anyway if it gets fired.

If it is purely a static display model, you might as well araldite the fitting in.

For soldering, wrap a wet tissue or something like that around the base of the steam dome - it's all too easy to unsolder that as well - speaking from experience here
bessytractor

yeah strip it
Steve_S

Yes, get that paint off.
James

Thanks guys.

Going on the majority vote, I think I'll leave the paint on

Ask what the owner wants. If he doesn't care then strip it.
James

He's a farmer, so he ain't fussed, he thought it were a Mamod

He just told us to fix it up

Totally agree with the Moose. The threads are a sod to solder and you run the risk of unsoldering the dome. Done it myself a several times.
James

Really??

That's a great tip... thanks a million!

I've been worried about it for ages now
