I'm one VERY happy cripple!Got my Jensen #75 today. No idea why, as I didn't ask for it to be shipped to me! It is all complete, chimney, burner etc. Original box is very good, and I just can't take my eyes off it

Trouble is you need two hands to pick up a Jensen 75 mate.
Hope you like it, it's a real brilliant runner, wait till you see the forward, stop, reverse in action. Quality kit mate.

Hi James,
Well...glad your Jensen 75 showed up in good nick on your doorstep...strange how that worked out!!! If it didn't come with a fuel tray, maybe you can line your Jensen 76 unfired tray with a bit of aluminum foil to protect it and give that engine a firing
Cheers,

Rog, it is all complete. Burner, chimney, even the limescale has been washed out the boiler!
Sorry for messing you around mate

No problem James, glad you got things in good order and boiler rinse by seller is a bonus...usually they send the lime and sometimes the water too!!!

Still! you can't compare that 50's Jensen. Reguardless of whether they have changed or not!
Stick a brand new Jensen next to a brand new Mamod then it's only fair!

Maybe so... but for it to be fair you need two engines from the same age. . Maybe Jensens still have the quality they did 50 years ago, but it's not really that fair to compare with a new Mamod in my opinion

I have a theory...
Cast Iron is cheap, and has been for the past god knows how many years.
Hence why these materials were cheap, and are cheap to this very day. Hence 'the same quality now since first produced' Prices would not have risen to the extent they had to change something.
Mamod had to change as the amount of brass on an SE4 is far too expensive to produce these days. Hence why Mamod had to change their designs
|
JensenSteamMan
|
MM.... the #75 doesnt have any cast iron.
The "new" hobby line engines are what Mr.Jensen came out with
in the 60's and 70's when Jensen was in hard times. So the hobby
line engines are the change in the design that Jensen had to do.
But quality was still retained to a high level. (MODERN mamods didnt seem to do that with their redesign, i guess that was
because they were sold out/ traded hands or was that before?)
I quote Steve (Sales manager for Jensen) aka Cedge
about experimenting with ball bearings on Jensen Collector
engines (cast iron bases)
"What we found was that the oil absorbed by natual cast iron creates a very desirable bearing surface."
what is better than cast iron for a bearing surface?
(in a toy engine)
I guess babbit bearings would be better, but I dont think its needed on a toy engine.
Cheers,
Casey

Yes but the only reason mamod changed the quality of their engines is because of the brass componants they have to use/ the cost of labour in England! It's either that or charge a stupid amount of money for each model! If you put the price of a mamod Sp5 and a Wilesco D whatever, and the largest Jensen beside eachother the prices will differ by hundreds of pounds!
If mamod wanted to make an expensive TOY that costs 400 pounds i'm sure they could. At the moment they are obviously happy to make toy steam engines at an affordable price

we are discussing the #75..... not a 400pound peice......
Mamod nor wilesco makes anything that compares to the upper
level Jensen's currently..... the #75 (low cost) has the same displacement as the D22 Wilesco (high cost) and it has proper
reverse linkage
I have always found that comparing a Jensen to a SIMILAR Mamod or Wilesco is cheaper, and with more displacement and better quality.
but anyways, this post is about James #75.... not about going over Jensen's value again... so lets leave it at this

Oh here we go again. Please stop it's like Groundhog Day. All engines are ok. If Jensen made a mobile, I'd get one. It's ok for James to like his newest engine and it's ok for MM to stick with his views of Mamod. Both have a place. Lets keep it light.

MM...
You really don't want to do the 50 year Jensen comparison. That predates the hobby line when every jensen was of manly macho cast iron, wrought by the hands of Tom Sr....(grin)
The #75 Jensen engine James has is from the very early 1960's and is a worthy comparison for any era engine you choose. 10 20 50 years... take your pick.....(grin). I think its an apples to oranges comparison when the scales and displacements just too far apart for it to work. The only change were the firebox material which we readily note to be a problem that we hope to cure soon.
What I don't quite understand is the almost bitter resentment of others collecting beyond the Mamod engines. One would think it was a personal affront. I still say enjoy the engines you own or hope to own, no matter who made them. What am i missing here?
MTA.... MM... just so you know... there are Jensen Collectors who are your twin, at least where product loyalty is concerned. They apparently love a Jensen much as you seem to love your Mamods.

I said earlier as long as the engine makes you happy thats all that matters and i look forward to seeing it in action.... So ummm no not really "bitter resentment"
Anyway its only an opinion Jensens do nothing for me, I'm yet to see anything from Jensen that does so thats about it really . You're paid by Jensen anyway, you're hardly going to start ripping Jensen apart even if their new engines were shit!

I would buy a older Mamod if I could find one for a decent price.
Especially the very early ones/ Hobbies (they kind of run in with
Bowman on my judgement so i'd like to have an early one.)
I think I'm pretty open to other brands.
I also want a Mamod of some date so I can do a head to head comparison with a Jensen of the same time, and just post up
facts (as in micrometer, scale, and running identical equipment.)
and let the viewers be the judge.
James,
I'll watch the video when I get home, I cant view it on the computer
I am currently on. Cant wait to see it!!!

You got to remember guys this is the mamod forums, there are going to be a little resentment towards other engines, and you also have to remember that when you have never actually seen a brand of engine in person, you can't compare it. Personally, i perfer jensen, but i also like mamod, now it may not be my favorite engine, but i take care of it, run it regulary, and keep it from falling apart. (TE1A)
