As this is now a done deal, I can give you a little sneak preview of the boat I'll be collecting from Wetherby on the 15th....
It's a Krick "Victoria" hull, modified to look like an Edwardian Windermere launch - in fact, it is modelled on the launch that was used in the film "Miss Potter". The engine is a bespoke unit, made by our own John "Bogstandard", who was also instrumental in securing this boat for me. It's a shade over three feet long.
It needs a bit of finishing off.....the clerestory roof to the cabin needs making, the rudder needs fitting and a few more finishing touches, but it comes with all the plans and materials, so that's a matter of a few evenings careful work. It is fully radio controllable.
.....and I literally can't wait to get my greedy mitts on it!
tmuir
Nice one Moose.
I remember seeing pictures of that a few weeks ago.
The detailing on the boat and even the figure are just amazing.
I'll look forward to see more photos of this and eventually a video.
All this boat buying of late by people here is making me very envious.
Les
That is a beautiful looking boat, you will have many happy hours sailing her, well done.
johnreid
Oh my Moose, that is a thing of beauty, so very nice. I cant wait to see you postings about it when it arrives.
Mamodman123
Looks real good Moosey!
You can probably set sail for france with that
johnreid
Does it come with the crew?
Griffin
Well for someone who admits that I am not really into boats, that one really grabs my attention. The boiler certainly looks the part, and is a real eye catcher.
Look forward to the pics once you have her in hand.
IndianaRog
That boat and engine could not have found a better harbor than the one on Mooseman Bay.
You will make short work of the finishing touches and be ready to take on the most aggressive duck or swan at the local pond!!!
Beautiful piece of work.

I believe so John....they're not really my bag, so if the original owner wants to keep them he'd be very welcome, if not they'll be free to a good home. I think they were very expensive!
johnreid
If they do not bother operation, keep them in place, they add a lot of charm. I bet Millie Moose would love to see them sailing in the boat.

That's true actually....hadn't thought of that.
Mamodman123
What does the actual engine unit look like on it? I can't really see from the pictures
I think you have your measurements not quite right, it isn't just over 3ft, it is just under 4Ft, 46 1/2" to be exact. So your smiles can get even bigger.
I hope you don't mind me showing it, but just for Mamodman, here is the custom engine I built for this boat. 10mm bore x 20mm stroke, double acting twin, four stainless ballraces in the crank system. Only four in the world of this design.
John

That is one hell of a boat Odilon
I personally cannot wait to see a video of it in the water

Wow thats a beast and some very fine work you've done there too

Nice one Odilon.
What a cracker.
Can't wait to see it finished.

A rousing cheer goes up from the crowd!!
I bet your smile will be just a tiny bit shorter in beam than the boat!!
Congratulations... Millie will be dressing those poor souls up in all sorts of outfits - watch out.

Ohhhh, my!
That`s NICE!
Well done that man......
MooseMan
I'm a very happy bunny, and I'll be even happier next Saturday.
I'd never dreamed I'd be the proud owner of something like that, and the fact that it has one of John's engines lends it a whole extra dimension/

thats a good boat Moose!
Congrats on getting it, your now a fully fledged model boater!
John, is the engine the same type we can see in operation on your youtube account?

May I add my public congratulations, here, Moose. A real beauty. Will you keep the name 'Miss Potter'. I don't see it on the bow yet.
If you do, you would definitely want to keep the scale figures. As you know they are specially commissioned likenesses of Renee Zellweger and Ewan MacGregor who starred in the film.
Stunning
johnreid
Not many can boast of going sailing with Renee Zellweger!
duncandumpertruck
Bravo! That's a tremendous looking launch and the detailing is great! I've always been a little unsure of the "lilliput" people too, But there does seem to be a charm about them on boats. Looking forward to seeing the final results! Ruairidh.

Probably not.....I'm not that much of a Beatrix Potter fan, a wee bit on the saccharine side for me, although I do admire her for her drawing skills.....kids and me are more of the CS Lewis/Roald Dahl/Rev.Awdry persuasion.
I think I might let the forum name her....after all, this is all your (collective) fault!
"Môr Forwyn" (Mermaid) was named by Millie, "Ellan Vannin" was named by ManxMan, the two Snipes are just that.....my Basil Harley Mabel hull is tentatively called "Mochyn Du", and the hull that came with my Peggy engine has a little nameplate that says "SV Margaret".....I haven't the heart to call it something else.....whoever Margaret was, she was obviously dear enough to someone to name a nice boat after.
Les
Why not 'Millie'

Odilon, I have to agree with everyone, what a great model. Give the figures to Millie and you can't go wrong. Right we'll all have to start thinking of names and then have a poll.

That is a really beautiful boat. I can't wait to see it on the water. I bet Millie can't wait either.
Well done

I'm really lucky that I live near two places where they allow model boats....Roath Park boat lake, which is about 4ft deep at most, and Cosmeston Lake, which is a flooded gravel quarry and more than 100ft deep....Roath Park first, I think!
Les
I think that would be the safer bet, not that it is going to sink anyway.

On the way back I called in on John "Bogstandard" - had a great time admiring all his beautiful original engines, which John put on the airline for me - a real treat. Thanks John!

Hurray- we all wait with held breath

Wow that sounds like a double treat, getting the new boat and visiting with John, all in the same trip! Not to mention tat you recently met with Graham and Jilly, some people have all of the luck.

cheers,

Drop dead gorgeous, Odilon.
Can't wait to see it sailing. I was talking to another forum member today about not buying a snipe in case a Victoria suddenly came up. Now I know I was right. Mine's out there somewhere
Congratulations, you must be over the moon.

Way out of my league!
Enjoy every minute of it Moose

I assume that Rene didnt come with it.
Bogstandard
As mentioned by Odilon, he visited me this afternoon.
It is always nice to meet people you have only ever had interaction with over the net. He turned up with such a grin on his face, I thought the top of his head would fall off. A real happy bunny.
A real pleasure to meet in person. I even managed to shake his hand with my newly fixed wing. Miracles were worked by the specialist last week.
It makes the action of helping people to find their certain little (in this case big) dream, even more pleasurable.
We did manage to get into my shop, full of swarf and rags at the moment, and Odilon managed to have a peek at my latest project.
I did manage to show him a few of my engines, but not all. Unfortunately, we were interupted by an international phone call from Moscow. More good friends requiring assistance.
I am sure that when Odilon gets his bearings again, he will be filling our lives with the finishing of this model.

True, but if I had just picked up that fine Boat ( or should I say Ship ) I think I would be so high on Adrenaline to collapse into bed.

I echo all the comments already made, Odilon.
Dare I say that is more merging into model engineering than Toy Steam due to the craftmanship
Now, when are you going to Windermere to try her out
steamyjim
Beutiful boat Moose!!!!!
MooseMan
Thanks for all your comments everyone! I've now more or less recovered, although when I close my eyes all I see is headlights....on the way back it poured down with rain from Crewe to Cardiff!
I'm now getting familiar with the boat, and I've had a trawl through the huge quantity of bits and pieces that come with it (including, John will be releived to know, Renée and her companions ).
I think my very first job will be getting comfortable with operating the engine. As this is my first "serious" engine I want to make very sure I get it right. It probably still needs a bit of bedding in, so I'll be doing a few ten minute runs on steam until it's completely smooth - will of course take video.
The next steps will be fitting the rudder and R/C, balancing her out and generally making shipshape....at that point sea trials will follow. After that, it will be finishing off with all the trimmings, making the roof and windows for the cabin, things like that....I'll take my sweet time sorting that out, I want everything I do to be of the same standard as the work already done.
Kritika
Wow Odilon…… NOW THAT is a thing or beauty.
Well done mate, I bet you wont rotate that one out of your collection in a hurry
Les
That is very nice, I do like that.

Oh my goodness ..........What a loveeerly boat!!! And what a lucky Moose
Enjoy
MooseMan
Had the engine running today - a fabulous thing! It's still bedding in, but already it runs very well at all speeds and directions. Here you see it running at about 25psi.....the main shaft can not be stopped by hand. The typical pitched note you hear is the hot air going up the flue - it rings like an organ pipe!
johnreid
Starting to get that high pitched Marine engine whine, even the sound is cool. I think you have one made by a skilled craftsman.

Holy crap! What a beast

I've never been much for model boats, but this one has me rethinking my position. I can honestly admit I'm envious of your new acquisition.

Moose,
You have the opposite problem to me. Great video.... except......way too short........ more angles please....... shots of that exquisite boiler, guages, etc. Photobucket gives you five minutes. I nearly always use them all and bore everyone to tears! I promise you I will watch every second you can shoot on that boat!
Bring it on.

That would be you, John. (Bogstandard)
Unless you guys stumble across another partial build I'm going to have to do this as a scratch build. Cheddar Puffin's seem to be hard to come across these days. What was special about the plant you built for this boat?
Did you notice the Tug with the Stuart Turner D9 got pulled from e bay? Wonder why? Despite three e mails the seller never sent me any additional photos.
mogogear
Richard there is a nice Puffin on ebay - with two engines- that could offset the price a little with a resale on the second engine....
then a boat....

Les,
I have already talked to Richard about this double steam plant.
It was a special made for when the Imara tug was first getting very popular. In all honesty the boiler is too big for the sort of boats that we are envisioning here. It really has to be run with the two engines, otherwise it would be a waste of a good steam plant.
Odilon,
I said it would be a nice runner when it has bedded in. At 25psi it will power the Miss Potter at a fair old rate. Don't worry about the organ pipe noise, that should disappear when the engine is running with a load on it (about 1/5th the speed you have it running in your vid).
Just for those interested, most commercial engines on the market are either usually square or very close. I will just explain that.
A square engine is one that has the bore and stroke of roughly the same dimensions, 10mm bore by 10mm stroke double acting. This is ok, but does produce engines that rev a fair amount.
Mine on the other hand is a long stroke, 10mm bore by 20mm stroke. It doesn't take any more steam than the other type when fully loaded, but does run a lot slower with a lot of slow speed 'grunt'. Perfect for a heavily loaded large pitch steam prop. When fully loaded in the water it will run nothing like as shown in Odilons vid. Just a nice serene nodding with the boat belting around the pond, but if needed it can quickly turn on the muscle to get out of trouble.
I didn't build the whole steam plant, but did recommend a perfect boiler for this engine, and how to marry the two together. Odilon should have all the details, but the boiler that was recommended came from here
Just to show how a well built and designed small engine such as this can easily cope, this is a model that is over 50 inches long. The gentleman customer had fitted a big Cheddar Proteus in the model.
He wasn't really happy with how it operated and powered the boat.
So he installed one of my little engines after asking me if it would cope with that size of boat, to which I duly replied 'no problems'.
To cut a long story short, he ripped out the engine part of the Proteus, stuck mine in, and ended up with a grin like a Cheshire cat.
Easy to use, with power to spare.
I could have made and sold dozens of these engines, but that wouldn't have made them so exclusive. It ended up as four verticals and two horizontals, of which I have one horizontal in my collection.
The gentleman with the above boat was so impressed with the one he had, he ordered another vertical, and a horizontal for a paddler he is building. I had to let him have the vertical out of my collection.
Maybe later in the year I will make another batch, same power outage but a different all round looker.
I hope not to have bored you too much with this info post.
John

Wow, Moosey, that really is a boat and a half, a real beauty, and John's motor is something else.

That is one AMAZING purchase, such a gorgeous launch. I am seriously drooling now. And I'm choosing to ignore how much it may have cost and living a blissful world where things like that just appear on people's bedroom shelves for no real explainible reason.
