Important Announcement from Meccano (albeit 84 years late)I thought that Meccano had always been colored and that was that. What a dilettante I am -- as this ad from the Boy's Own Paper shows:

Still no colour in the advert, though I prefer the uncoloured version myself.
I wish you could get them at those prices now

Mind you, the top end prices were spectacularly high. For example, had an agricultural laborer been thrifty (and daft) enough to put aside all of his average wage of 31 shillings or so at the time (for a 50-hour week) it would have taken him about 4 months to make enough for the best oak-boxed set.
That's probably why you don't see many of these for sale in the country

in the beginning it was called
Mechanics made easy ? and was plain tin,
then it was Meccano and Nickel plated of which I have the number 6 set but only the cardboard box

Interesting and that No 6 must be a great set.

I couldn't think of a way of making the stuff less realistic that you make by having it painted green and red. Must of been a weird looking world back then.
I was quite happy to paint mine black and gold.

And within a few years it would go to being gold and royal blue plates with a gold criss-cross pattern. Even more realistic - not.
But it was all about sales - as always.
