Improvements on a homemade steam engine

Hi, on my homemade steam engine before it had a wooden flywheel, which worked fine at high speed, but couldn't idle very well, so i replaced it  with a very beefy solid steel flywheel, the flywheel orginally had a 1/2 bore hole with a set screw, luckily i had a piece of copper that was 1/2  in. outside and press fit nicely, and slightly undersized 1/4 in inside diameter . I drilled it out with my small lathe ( Pictures later today) here are the pics.

before

After

Since the flywheel already had a set screw, and the 1/2 in. part of the copper was only 1/8in thick, i could still use the set screw because the the flywheel was tapered slightly enough so the set screw would clear the copper. The engine idles beautifully now
and because the exhaust in fairly long it has an awesome sound
I'm going to need to add an extra bearing to the thin piece of brass so it doesn't wear out. This week is a 3 day weekend so i'll have some vids of this engine soon

Cool stuff.  Love seeing what others are up to...

Thanks, the engine is pretty small 1/4 bore 5/8 stroke, basically same specs as a Wilesco d6. On this engine i did something different, the hole in the steam chest, were the tubes are soldered, the holes are 5/64, but on the cylinder the hole is 3/32, so the cylinder intakes %100, and exhaust %100 because it overlaps. This think fly's on live steam, and is fun to watch

Connor, my hat's off to you...not many of us can build an engine from scratch...I sure can't!!!

Well done!

Thanks, the hardest part was soldering the the pivot point straight,  without de-soldering the cylinder, and keeping the cylinder flat as possible for a seal. It was very frustrating, but it was well worth seeing it run

Ingenuity pays, that is turning out nicely.

I know I've seen this one before... Baily I think it was?

Thanks, all i need to do now is to get a better base, and put a boiler on it

I'm looking forward to seeing this one run.

it always a relief to see one you have made run .It makes all the frustration worthwhile

Nice work SLV!

The improvements look good, when's the video coming out??

Tomorrow   , I'll get some 1/8 in tubing so i can run it on live steam, The thing runs like the clappers, and is easily reaching speeds my Jensen 5 was. The thing is pretty gutless, but at 25-30 psi, I'm confident it could run a small generator, at a 1 to 1 pulley ratio.

Nice creation, looking foward to the video!

Video is done, it will take about an 1 hour and  1/2 to load though, and it's on live steam

Video is uploaded! look in video section
