Is this Loco alright?

I want to buy this Mamod, but I don't know if it is a good buy. It seems to be going way to cheap.

Any tips?

It looks good and if it stays at that price will be a bargain but I'm guessing in the last few minutes the price will rocket up.
It also has screws not rivets holding the sight glass in which is good as it means its easy to replace the sight glass (plastic) should you ever need to.
The best thing about these locos is short of terminal rust or a holed boiler just about everything else can be pulled apart and fixed.

Go for it
CCairns

Boiler sight glass (which is actually plastic) has obviously been changed as the brass back plate is now held on by roundhead screws. These were either copper riveted or brass cheesehead screws from the factory. Could mean that the boiler was run dry, although melted sight 'glass' are quite common in Mamod locos with no other damage. Green paint inside cab looks a bit funny, but another SL1 on ebay UK has the same effect, so it must be the influence of the flash used for the photo. He has already lapped the cylinders and reverser/regulator so it should run OK. Bit difficult to say anymore as the photos are very dark. Should be a good deal if it does not go much higher.

Thanks guys, I expect some price increase, but I remain hopeful

well spotted Chris

Cab floor has been drilled or something, the sight glass has been fiddled with as the screws are replacements.

Running wise you don't know until you buy it, you could have the best 'out of box' Mamod loco ever produced, or the worst.

Hopefully it's a gooden if you decide to bid

Ending very soon, loco is worth a punt at that price.  I would say that the postage price will hold back things a bit.  Three boxes of track and a loco from overseas would cost a bit I reckon.  The auction really only happens in the last 10 secs.

Good Luck

Well nothin happened, I got it without a battle after I outbid his max.

Aye, I have a loco! Never thought I would, as they are normally so expensive. Just hope I can get it to run
Nick

Did you ask about shipping 1st, it is $33 to MN, I asked.
Stitch

Congrats, Trapper      That was a very good price

Great price with the track but now you need really deep pockets as you will soon find you want more track, rolling stock, uprated safety valve, then another loco to go with it....

Congratulations, would like to see pictures and a video when you get it.

Total of $164.93, so shipping was $36. I am glad for that price, I am really looking forward to getting it   How much track do these normally come with when bought as an actual set?
Nick

Yes, it still is a good buy, but I wish they wouldn't charge so much for shipping.

16 curves and 4 straights i think

That's a good price.  The Locos can take a bit of setting up if they aren't good out of the box.  All the experts are here though.

I have two, one was great and had been well used by the previous owner the other was terrible .  Both are great now thanks to this form (& MM in particular )

Either way it's all great fun.
Mamodman123

Rosa was the worst Mamod loco ever!

But you have to stick with them, and eventually you get them going.

I'm always glad to help
Minor1PJG

And a good help you were too

The SL1 arrived from canada finally yesterday   The entire box of straight track was destroyed in shipping though

But I set up a circle in the garage, fired it up, and experienced the greatness of Mamod Locos   It runs very well I take I am very lucky for that, previous owner has done all the running in for me. Now a just need an open wagon to put some weight in to hold it down!! Derailed several times and once it went running across the garage

Great stuff, will post a vid sometime maybe. Although it is just one lone loco on a little circle.

Sorry about your track, I just got a package from Canada that looks like their postal service has orangutans for handlers.  Be looking forward to the video.

Can you make a claim?
tmuir

Glad the loco works well, shame about the track.
It is a fine art adjusting that regulator to keep the loco on the track.
Graham-Jilly

The seller has agreed to refund most of the shipping, as that is where the damages occured. Nice guy!

Yep that regulator is tricky, but fun

Thanks G-J
