Jeanerette 453B first steamingI managed to get out into my workshop and had a play with my Jeanerette.
For those that don't know this engine it would of been made around 1935 and is my oldest Australian made engine and probably my rarest engine too.
It actually took very little work to get going. Just had to hit the whistle with the blow torch and dunk it in water 4 or 5 times to unstick it.
I then punched out and fitted Teflon gaskets to the SV and whistle which John Reid had given me and I must say it worked very well, took the cylinder off and put some light oil in it and slid the piston up and down it a few times then wiped out the gunk with a rag. Put some steam oil in the cylinder and on the piston and refitted it.
Oiled up the other moving parts, filled the boiler and fired it up and it worked great.
The massive flames you see in the video are caused by 2 things. No flue to direct the flames up and my burner developped a leak during the run but I decided to let it keep going.
All in all I think for a seventy something year old engine it ran very well for its first run.
Enjoy

Looks like a great runner, I think you have been busy now that you are back in the shop

Tony, you summed it up in the video...It fairly flies!!! Robust looking thing for sure and mechanically you could not ask for more.
Flamethrower at the bottom might need checking for leak, but whatever it is should be simple.
Never heard of a Jeanerette...but like it now I see one.

That runs beautifully.
By the way it isn't a lead flywheel on there is it?

No lead flywheels on any OZ engines that I'm aware of.
All pre and post war models up until the 60s sported brass flywheels, well most did.
If you would like to know more about Jeanerettes look here, not that I have much info on them.
