Jensen 10 - 1951 - Restored

Well, it needs a new lamp post,
new boiler (original was plugged with oversize Allen screws),
glass gauge assembly (including blocks),
new heater, new AC cord, new Hayco plug,
new Safety Valve,
new whistle,
new steam dome screw,
refinish the wood, refinish the firebox,
refinish the engine,
generator had a short, refinish generator,
new smoke stack, asbestos insulation needed replacement for new non-asbestos material, etc. etc.

Started by dissembling the whole engine for a detailed cleaning. On the boiler-firebox area: only the firebox was usable. The heater was shorted out badly. The internal tray was totally corroded. To the garbage can both went.

Wood base was refinished, firebox refinished, engine cast base was refinished. Special color match and custom made paint was required for this task.

With help from our forum colleague, Nick, I was able to find a leak (short circuit) on the generator as Nick's readings from his Jensen 10'51 didn't match what I was getting from my generator. I run tests with a variable speed hand drill hooked up to the engine by a rope used as belt. Fixed the generator.
The problem was underneath it. The brush screw was missing a piece of insulation material that keeps the screw from touching the screw walls on the iron cast base. Problem solved. Hopefully I didn't have to rewire the whole generator. Would have been nice to do so though. But... If it works why touch it!!!

I made of a list of required items and placed an order with Ministeam and Jensen to deliver in my country. Roger helped me a lot on this. His data input was very important. His web page provided me with valuable tips for fixing the glass gauge assembly. The pics on his site of a similar engine were invaluable. Thanks Rog!

Videos from Mark-One, posted on Youtube were also useful.

3 weeks later, received all the needed parts. Others were going to be recycled from parts I got from Owen for my Jensen 45.

Owen help me a lot. I got a boiler from Owen. He polished it for me and prepared it. Thanks Owen!

Now, I was ready to start full assembly:

The lamp post required modification. Had to Dremel cut the threaded cap at the bottom and take this unused piece out.

The engine was assembled and installed on the wood base.

The brand new heater and non-asbestos insulation material was also installed

I am posting this just in case a new guy, like me, would like to start a rebuilding project from an old engine. When you are done with the project, you feel like your engine has got a different personality, its own personality given by you!

I know, I could have gone further with the finish but I was eager to see this engine working again.
I am still missing the UL sticker. Got the image from Roger. Will be ready soon.

-Safety valve didn't have a spring at all. It dissolved completely inside the original boiler, who knows how many years ago. What is left of the safety valve had welded together in a solid one piece by the passing of time. With care I was able to separate the pin from the valve nut and is free again but needs a new spring which I will have to build my self or will have to get it somewhere.

-Whistle, same story here. Only a couple of wire turns around from what use to be a spring. Will also require to be rebuilt with a new spring.

You can see both on the picture showing all pieces apart. SV is on top of the air gun pellet box tin cover. Whistle can be seen inside the air gun pellet box.

Rob, you did a wonderful job of restoration, really beautiful.  Your step by step explanation will indeed help someone else down the road.

I love the wood refinishing...it looks like a fine piece of furniture now!  Glad you discovered the cause of generator shorting out.  

Again, thanks for sharing, it's good to see such a rare piece live again!

ps...you can buy replacement SV springs from Jensen for very little cost

I think it's one of those "truisms" in life, that engines which take a lot of effort, but turn out well, become the most loved ones in a collection.

I've sold a number of engines myself, but the hardest ones to resurrect are still with me!!!

I feel like this with my Hemmens 3/4" x3/4". It's a great reason to look for engines in need of love, and I enjoy doing this with boat hulls too.

If one was to look in the "For Sale" Section at the complete 5 I just sold...  That was the donor engine for the boiler!  2 success stories from one.  That 5 is now on its way to a new home.
Rob, I assume the safety valve I sent with the boiler works OK?  The one that was on the boiler the spring also turned to dust.... (not to mention had NO nickel plate left on it)

That 10 look great.  Really nice job.  I am green with envy!!

Reckon that my friend! This engine was slowly "becoming part of the ship" (if you saw Pirates of the Caribbean 3 you will understand)... in other words, disintegrating and slowly helplessly dying into eternity... you did help rescuing it, to be again enjoyed by the new generations to come.
