Jensen 100 Resotration

Today My jensen 100 workshop arrived save and sound. 1 Shipped on Wendsday, arrived on Thrusday.

I didnt get a pic before complete disassembly, but here is the one from the ebay auction.

The hammer is broken off, I dont have it, it was broken when I bought it. I just didnt notice due to the small pictures. I'm going to have to build/get another hammer.

The drill press is missing 1 pulley, I'm going to have to build/get another one.

Disassembled and all the parts put into bags.

The base, it had a sticker, but it was in poor condition so I already removed it.

The broken hammer

I need another one of these pulleys, it seperates the belt on the drill press.

All the tools are completly disassmebled, except for the table saw. I saw no reason to take it apart, and no way how

If anyone has the workshop, I would like some measurments of the hammer and hammer rod.

Does anyone have any ideas for the missing pulley? Make/ machine ect.

Tomorrow, my secret paint removing method will be revealed
Les

Do Jensen still make the #100, if so they may have the parts you need.
IndianaRog

Les, the model 100 ceased production at Jensen in 1985...only source of parts for them is the "donor" route.

You never know they may have parts tucked away and forgotten about.

Are you sure your just not talking about your own 'steam shelves'?

My secret paint removing method.... Sand blasting. I have a blast cabinet so its easy to do.

Before.

After.

Took just minutes to do that. The pulleys and other parts were a bit harder, that brass/copper paint (maybe even a coating) is hard to get off. Took about 2 hours on and off outside (95 degrees plus) to do everything.

After the blasting, I sanded it with 220 grit just to knock off any casting marks and see what I needed to fill with putty.

Here is the saw after putty and ready for prime.

Shaper and drill press needing sanding after putty.

Here is the putty I used for filing up pinholes and such

Me and my dad use the stuff on cars, so it should work with this.

Priming and more painting tomorrow, maybe sunday. A car dealer is having an auction and getting rid of all their tools and stuff

Looks like a good paint removal system for sure Ranger...using the red body putty is also good for removing nicks, dings and casting bubbles.  I bet the works looks pretty good when you get done.

Does anyone have the dmemnsions for the hammer and rod? I would like to make one out of metal and epoxy it to the existing part.
IndianaRog

I can't help you Ranger...sold my last #100 six months ago.

If you are going to make up a shaft and epoxy a hammer to it, I think you need to drill a hole in the stub and the added on part, then include a nail or rod of some kind for strength.  That constant tapping will break epoxy or JB weld loose I would think.
johnreid

loose tools show up on Ebay all the time, I bet 10 hammers have been on Ebay this last year. I bought a spare shaper for mine that way. I will try to remember to take some pictures with a tape measure in them tomorrow.

When I saw the pics Rangersteamtoys posted, I noticed a strange shape on the raw wood. It looks like an eye shape.
Now take a look at my Jensen Workshop 100 and look at the board... the very same shape!

Photobucket

I am not good at working with wood and know little about the subject... but is this a coincidence? same lot? or what? Not same tree because it is plywood. Please comment.
IndianaRog

Rob, those eye shaped pieces of wood in the surface of plywood are cut and fit to repair a bad spot in the wood...when sanded flush they maintain the surface of the plywood, though they do look a bit odd.   It is very common to see them in plywood here.
Keith S

I'll comment, because you invited us to, even though I don't know much about wood. The higher grades of plywood (marine, etc) have the knot holes filled in. I have actually always wondered how they do that, but that is what than curious eye shape is on your board. As for why your board and Ranger's have the same shape in the same place, I don't know, except I think when they make the thin sheets of veneer they shave it off a log so that the same knot hole appears on the sheet of veneer over and over again at regular intervals, so a piece of plywood made with it would have the same pattern? After that it just seems like a co-incidence that you would have the same hole in the same place unless your board and Ranger's are so close together in manufacture date that they came from the same piece of plywood...

I'm just guessing..

New to me! Thank you sir!
New thing that goes to my knowledge bag.
As I said, I am good working with metal but helpless with wood!
metalhead100

I know how they do it....

The worker has a hand held router with a plate on the bottom ...the plate is a guide that when pushed down onto the wood lets the worker make a quick circular motion and cut the eye....then a "patch/biscuit ect" is glued and hammered in the hole...

Saw it on video in High School wood shop class......

Thank you Rog and Keith S. Thank you both. I sure ask because I am so eager to learn.

Thanks.
robertosala

Right on! thank you guys!
Incredible how things have changed... I have noticed that, old things I have bought on eBay and that has got wood in it, usually it is made with poor quality.
Since I was a small  boy I got use to see locally made furniture and things made on wood with thick, heavy, nice, solid wood. Off course now it is so different. Everywhere in my country, you see things made with cheap pressed wood, imported from far east. I really miss the old days (well the 60's up to the late 70's).
When I received this Jensen 100 I thought that I was going to replace the board but then I saw that plywood has always been the material used by the factory then I left it like that... Solid wood is not expensive in this country but will not keep it "original".

Now a question: I don't have a collector's engine like a model 5, 10, 50 etc. Do they also use plywood for those?
johnreid

I believe the really old ones might have use solid wood, but more than  99.9% of all you will see have plywood. Plywood became really popular right after WWII and I suppose that Mr Jensen saw the value in the product, In fact, plywood is less apt to warp than dimensional lumber, a plus for wet steam engines.
rangerssteamtoys

Same patch, just on the other side of the workshop, the people at jensen must have flipped it around.

Today, I think I'm going to paint all the parts red
