John "Bogstandard" displacement lubricator fittedThought I'd share my experiences with the displacement lubricator I was kindly given by John. I fitted it to the SEL unit in my Arrow launch, as this engine likes to be well lubricated. I used compound 680 steam oil. The engine ran markedly smoother, if a little slower - maybe I'll use a lighter oil than the compound 680 I used this time around. Oil was evident in the exhaust condensate, and after a 20 minute run there was still a little oil in the lubricator, but mostly oily water, which separated after cooling down.
So it looks the part and works the part! Thanks John - you've now inspired me to start making my own and fit them to all my "custom" boats.
The lubricator fitted, rear deck removed:
Filled with compound steam oil:
In full steam:

Looks like it was made for it Moose, sits in that space just right.
Nice one.

Nice one Odilon, by the sounds of it these need a 0.7mm hole rather than 1mm, the oil should last about half an hour or maybe more.
But at least we know they work on your boat engines.

John, I'm sure that if I had the boiler capacity it would've lasted for half an hour.

It looks just right. Clever design too!

It's wonderful. I will be begging John for one for the D21...to buy,
lest this serial generosity of John's become his insupportable burden.

Nice one Moose,
Have you got an oil trap on the exhaust? You'll need one to comply with regs about poisoning fish etc.

suits it very well Odilon. very smart.

Ian, I do, but it's a very basic affair (basically a 35mm film canister with a bit of tubing) so one of my projects for this year after I've tackled silver soldering is to make a better one which I can permanently install in my "custom" boats, and another one which can be fitted to my old boats without making major structural alterations.

Thats a good idea, sometimes the simple things are best

the 35mm film cannister doesn't melt? Good one to remember
The lubricator really looks the part and, more importantly, is doing it's job well.

Nah, although it does go a bit flexible with the heat. By the time the steam reaches it it has cooled down very significantly - expanded out of the exhaust port, traveled down the steam tube. I'm not sure if I'd recommend it though, I only put it in as a stopgap solution after I noticed my Arrow was leaving drops of oil on the surface of the boat lake.

OOOH is this a rule for all steam boats? Should have thought the oil output wouldnt harm a minnow, shame that oil leaves a tell tail slick
Was only admiring the brass exhaust on Swallow yesterday does this mean some sorting here too

Only really need it if you have a lubricator fitted, not really necessary if you only add a drop to the moving parts before running.

Glad to hear that Tony, if Fred gets a pool up for SITA bet hed be peeved if theres an oilslick to deal with

Maybe boats should be lubricated with cod-liver oil. Surely that wouldn't harm any fish?
(apart from the cod who's livers were extracted of course)

Don't worry Odilon,
I have a design for a dead easy oil catcher in my head, hopefully next week I will post it up like I did with the lubricator, and it will be yours when the pics are taken.

I use a glass jam jar for an oil separator. IT's got a metal lid that pipes can be soldered into.
It's too large for a boat, but I've seen, and have, small ones about 2/3 the height of the 35mm film can (stuff from gift baskets and such).
