Just won a very early Scorpion VerticalI just won this Scorpion off ebay and got it for a better price than I was expecting.I believe this to be one of the very earliest examples of a Scorpion Vertical. There were 3 different cast iron bases for this Vertical and this is the earliest type, also notice that the crank is of built up construction rather than just a bent rod. You only see this on this type of base. Also notice that the engine mount is different to most, it has a small rectangle of brass riveted on for the faceplate and I think the rest is just bent up steel unlike all the later ones when this is a single cast brass part. I'm unsure if the exhaust pipe is original or not at the moment and it is fitted with a non-original SV, chimney is missing as well as burner. I have a theory that there is one more earlier variation than this but I haven't been able to confirm that yet and until I do I'm keeping that a secret.

One more point I would hazard a guess as this being a 1945 model.
My Scorpion collection is growing, I now own 3 verticals and one horizontal Scorpion.

Saw that Noted it some days ago & figured you would be on to it  To think, some months ago 'tmuir' would have just been some anonymous bidder/buyer pseudo. Now I know who it is, where engine is going, what will become of it & follow its progress

I only need one more (maybe two) to complete the full range of Scorpion Verticals (That I'm aware of). The scary thing I thought that 4 months ago and then discovered this variation (I know of 2 examples of it). I wonder if I will find any other variations in the future. | ||

3 Vertical Scorpions (including this one) and one horizontal Scorpion, I also have 1 working and 1 parts Vertical Renown and a Renown Steam Roller. Once I get this one I'll do a family photo of all my OZ engines. |
