KENVERSIONS Mamod on Ebay

I just bought this little loco on Ebay, it's a Mamod with a drop on saddletank body made by Kenversions. I don't know much about the history of these little loco's, I believe they were made in the mid to late 1980's, any additional info would be appreciated, there was a review of these in issue 31 of SMT.

I'm getting quite attached to these little oscilating cylindered loco's, with some Mamod Lineage my collection currently consists of a:

Salem modified Loco
A much upgraded MSS
Satin Black MSS with some minor mods
IP Jane with mods
Mike Chaney Kitten
Locobox Bagnall

Glad somone I know got it!! Might have been tempted myslelf!!

Are those lubricators on the front? Looks like a cool modification.

I think they are cosmetic representations of sand boxes. The whole idea of this Kenversions kit was to make the Mamod look like the Festiniog Railway Prince, or any of the other George England locos

Well done for getting that one Alan - I had it on my watch list but decided not to bid what with my loco projects already on the go

I have attached some other Kenversions pictures that I have (the locos sadly are not mine) as they may be of interest.

Are those actual slide valve conversions or only cosmetic changes?

I like them.
I wonder with the new Mamod loco we may start seeing this sort of thing coming out again.
ministeamer

so are these still in production, then, because I love that little engine!

No, in the 1980s there was a whole cottage industry making after market mods for Mamods, but most have stopped long ago making them.
You can still get some upgrades from Dreamsteam, PPS and Alan but nothing as radical as those shown above that I'm aware of but I'm happy to be told if I'm wrong

Wow, it is hard to believe that underneath the Kenversion is a Mamod ! Were there kits available, anybody know ?

I like the look of the water hatch in two of the photos.

The Kenversions modified Mamod Loco arrived in the post this morning!

The cab and saddletank are a one piece assembly, which simply lifts off the loco. All the sheetwork is soldered together, there's also ample use of round brass rod used around the cab openings, top of the bunker etc.

Underneath the body is a pretty much standard Mamod SL loco. One other modification is a gas burner, it's a very unusual design and I'll have a closer look at that prior to putting a match to it!

The gas tank is rectangular and sits on top of the frames, the drop on sheetwork neatly fits around the tank, which locates the cab. The front of the saddletank just sits over the boiler.

There are some neat little touches, although the execution of some of the details leaves a little to be desired, handrail knobs on the saddletank are simple split pins, handrails on cab side are just brass wire bent to shape and soldered on.

The actual operation of the burner is rather unique, inside the cab is a dummy backhead, above this is a small air gap to allow hot gasses to vent from combustion chamber. There is also a chimney inside the cab that vents out of the top of the cab roof.

The construction also seems to imply that it was designed by someone who enjoyed soldering! It looks like it must have been the devils own job to assemble the tinwork!

wish i got that!

Here's a sketch of the Gas Burner in the loco

It's unlike any I've seen, rather crude, the gas jet is just the small piece of rod which protrudes from the bottom of the gas tank, this has been drilled out and a small hole drilled to direct gas into the burner tube. The burner tube is just a piece of thin wall brass tube with 22 holes, each approx 1.5mm dia.

There's a standard Ronson type filler on a corner of the tank.

The gap between the jet and the opening in the burner is approx 6mm, so the jet in effect is right in the open...

looks good alan, im sure you will fettle about with t in the usual style.

gas burner is nice and simple
