lagging questioni have made a start on steam launch no2, owing to the mess of the boiler i put in an old wilesco boiler i had knocking around, i made a vew mods and got it going
i now want to lag it before instaling and repainting the boat and engine
i know how to lag the pipes and i know how to lag the boiler with wood but what material do i use to lag the boiler before laying the wood on top

I'm not so sure lagging is a good idea on a boiler like that, especially wood or anything else combustable. You can see where the flames have been! It would have to be something like asbestos and that is nasty for other reasons. There are industrial replacements for asbestos but They are probably expensive, and I wouldn't know where to go for them anyway.
Whatever you use, be careful to leave the gap between boiler and firebox to let the gasses escape.

good point Roly, perhaps i should just lag the pipes and leave the boiler well alone?

If you want it to look better, you could fit a cowl like on the Mamod marine engines or meccano engine. It would also protect it from the wind.

A hearty "SECOND" on the cowl idea from Roly! That should cut down on the heat loss out on a drafty pond... With a little work you could add some etched lines to give it some interesting detail.
I like the engine "mask" too!

Kaowool would be ok to lag the top of the boler with and then fit either a brass or stainless steel sheet on top of that.
Kaowool isn't that expensive and can be got from most model engineering shops.
I agree with Roly that wood probably wouldn't be the best to lag the boiler with.

Lagging in this case would have the opposite effect - a pot boiler like that needs the convection of hot air around it. If you make a cowl, make sure it has plenty of ventilation holes in the top, otherwise you'll find your boiler won't raise steam.

I think lagging is only practical if you have a fire tube(s) and / or smoke tube(s) like a locomotive boiler. Never seen any lagging on boilers with an open flame beneath.

Mind you, lagging the firebox internally is a very good idea. I've used Jensen insulating pads with good success, but mica or vermiculite sheeting would work as well.

I wouldnt bother Jay, the limiting thing for performance i would think is therelatively small amount of fuel in the burner.
Its pretty similar to the mamod/ bowman boats sizewize and they go for a fair while without a shred of lagging.
