Latimer Plane L4

My newest purchase:

I have to admit, I know nothing about this engine, but I really like it.

It will be shipped out some time in the next  few days, so it will be a little while before I get it.

Very Interesting
oldstuff

Never had one but I like 'em alot. Red painted steam pipe is neat, nice that
yours still has it. Funnel, burner, box...nice package, Nick.
Sandman

That's a really nice engine Nick.

I've bid on a few of these but got beat at the last minute.

By what I can gather, they are excellent runners but have limited power.

Look forward to the pics when you get it
Les Marsh

Nice purchase, will look forward to seeing some more pictures.
Stitch

Great looking engine Nick      I have been after one of those for a while now.
steamgranny

I have one of these delightful & very well built engines, although you may be surprised at how small it actually is on arrival

However, with no form of steam control it's an all or nothing runner & always expected it to either take off or disintegrate at full speed  I therefore did some experimenting with a crude burner cover & below video shows positive results obtained. I shall make a more elegant version soon.
I've never tried powering anything but suspect it is capable of running a small accessory.
I think you'll be happy with your purchase, that looks very complete & in good condition

Nick

Thanks for the information.

If anyone else has some, please share it here.

I will now watch the video.

..............And in case you scratch your head as to whereabouts of SV - it's inside the chimney, that unscrews & also acts as filler hole
johnreid

It seems to me that the smaller the engine the all out faster they run.

I guess they flywheel weighs less so the steam can move it faster.
johnreid

I was wondering if the shorter throw of the piston rod might also contribute, plus the smaller displacement of the small diameter pistons require less steam to move them?

Yes thats true too.

That might be a good thing to know.

I will probably make up some way of controlling the flame, because I like to run my engines at the slowest speed possible.

How do you keep the cylinder oiled?

Do you just oil it up good before the run and then the steam/oil mix keeps it well lubricated during the run?

Thanks for the help.

(If anyone else has this engine, please post your pictures here.)

Now you've got me curious...how small are they? Like a Minor 1?
Granny? Nick?

I was told the boiler is about the size of a MM1's boiler.

Here's some information on the L4 & L5:

http://www.freewebs.com/organgrinders/steamtoys/latimer.htm

(It also tells about the boiler size)
oldstuff

Thanks for the link, Nick.

Well, that's interesting...except for the different base,
the L5 looks just like one of my Luton Bowmans.

With difficulty!
In fact, it's quite easy to squeeze a little in between port face & cylinder before run & more or less accurately drop a dab on top during, if needs be. It'll all come out again when running, though & spray everywhere, thus I advise a large towel for a tiny engine

Sorry, was wandering about on other threads
Don't have a MM1 for comparison but my L4 boiler measures 3.7 cms X 8.9 cms  or 1 1/2" X 3 1/2 ". My little Doll overtype has roughly same size boiler but manages to look bigger because of superstructure etc.
Nick

Only 1 1/2" X 3 1/2"?!?

I have never seen an MM1, but that seems really small.

I can't wait to get it now.
Steve_S

Chuck, you're right about the L5 looking like a Luton, I've always thought that too!

I've posted these pictures before, but any excuse is welcome. Here are my L4 and L5:

Nick

Thanks for the pics, but now I want the L5 too.

Agreed!
Can't have enough of a good thing, so they say, especially Latimer 'things'
Nick

My L4 arrived. Dancing banana

I am shocked how tiny it is.

Here it is opened up:

Look how small it is.

steamyjim

Thats a brilliant engine Nick!

Tiny aswell
Les Marsh

That's not small, that's sweet.
Minor1PJG

I was thinking that too Les!!

Now I need a L4 to go with my L5
kusuchi

Very cute little engine.  Mocha scale

I was thinking just the opposite.

And there is an L5 ending shortly.
Nick

I decided to fire it up and got it to power an accessory.

It was very weak, but by itself, a very fast runner.

Watch this space for pics and videos.
Nick

A little blurry, but here it is warming up:

Another shot of the engine:

And here is what I hooked it up to:

Closeup of it running, after I removed the burner:

Wallace

Hey Nick, that's a real nice buy. Well done

Nice pics. Even though it's small, it looks like it has a bit of power with that flywheel
Nick

I found out it doesn't have much power, but was fun to run.

THe little ones are fun to watch, even if they lack some power. I still run my engines without running any accessories with them.
Nick

It's weak, but when it's running by itself, it goes way too fast.

I'll have to take SG's advice and put a "cover" on the burner to decrease the flame.
