lever valves.

these little valves as featured on early mamods have given me some grief for some time. ever so simple and ever so hard to make!!! i made one a week ago and it took nearly four days complete with stuff ups.
some early stuff ups.

many hours of research on the net didnt yeild much info only thousands of companies that make them. the proper name for this type of valve is a PLUG VALVE  also known as a plug cock ,rooster valve ect ect...... how do you make them????

my new one on the left and a mamod se3 regulator adapted to 1/4 me for whistles on the right and in the front some extra tapers i made for more valves.

research found that at home you had to make your own taper reamer and also some extra plugs because you will never get the setting again to exactly match the reamer.????????

i also found a pic of a plug being"honed" in on a lathe. this got me thinking. its also a fact with this type of valve grease is needed to get a proper seal. (confirmation about a earlier post )tghis method worked well for me today.........

make some tapers (plugs) the taper doesnt have to be exact. it needs to be straight (i used a file)
make your body how ever you want it. i put a 1.5mm hole straight through it!

the next bit is fiddly. mount the body in  the chuck so you can drill a hole for the taper..make this hole the smallest diametre of the taper next .i used a drill which was not quite the largest diametre to make just a start in the body. now using the tang of a file ream it out but keep it under size.

all this is basic but its this bit i nutted out today!!!!!!

whilst the body is in the chuck  i mounted a taper in the chuck on the tailstock. applied a bit of valve grinding paste on the taper and proceeded as if drilling. very slowly applying pressure with the tailstock.its getting nearly there! so you have to be careful now!! my first attempt "grabbed and broke the taper. i now switched to brasso for a finer hone. yep thats good now!!!! i applied some steam oil and ran the lathe so the valve heated up and cooked some oil into it!! it was perfect!!!! so i finished the valve! time wise for the valve 2 hours!! steam tested... beautiful!!! im going to be making many more

That's brilliant!
Now I know who to ask when I need custom regulators.

its been bugging the hell out of me. ive seen it done at a mower repair shop when i was in my teens ... all the old mowers had them on their petrol tanks till they switched to the push /pull type  then they went plastic! i couldnt quite remember but as i was doing it ...it all started to come back. . i also seem to remember seeing /reading ???? about taper sets for petrol taps????? its the same valve and it was a post about making petrol taps for old motor bikes that gave me some clues.

Great work Glenn .

I think you can " Corner the market in aftermarket valves "

thanks geoff i will leave it to the professionals i need seven to complete my engines five more for whistles and thats just for starters. i also want to use this valve on some wells engines for speed control. just a longer body and have the steam pipe come straight to it from the engine frame to save putting a bend in the pipe. a day doesnt last long around a lathe. lol
Stilldrillin

i was inspired to give it another go after a trip to the scrapman yesterday. i was collecting some taps to melt down when i found amongst them these old "plug" type taps.

the one in the front is a gem! its a 1/8 bsp and is twice the size of 1/4 me pm research valve and half as big again as the globe valve i made. the two big ones at the back are going into the pot.       as old as they are they still seal!!!
