Lighting up timeI lit up 'Pulborough' today, and for the first time successfully Everything is as it should be, 40 psi on the dial and rising (100psi is the time to shut the blower and move off shed). Nice bed of coal with the flames licking out, and 3/4s of a glass

Also today, Andy brought along his SP4 (which is now back together BTW!). It was rather windy but it still ran, albeit for not very long... It didn't seem to want to run in reverse either

The backhead in this loco is so close to you, you end up with your lower half boiling and your top half freezing cold I am rostered again to drive on the 27th May, should anyone like to drop by and possibly join me in the cab for a cab ride or a free trip If the cab ride, space inside is limited

It's all fun (except when you burn yourself on the firebox door handle ) Although hot weather and hot steam engines don't mix I find

Can I ask a technical question? The pipe feeding steam to the pressure gauge has a loop in it. What purpose does it serve?
And what do the keys do hanging from the whistle control? Does it have a starter motor?

Pipe was too long and no one had a saw with them.

I think I've seen others like it though.

Expansion loop??

The coil of pipe is to stop condensation reaching the gauge, so it doesn't give a false reading The keys are for the engine shed points. The keys are kept with the engine throughout the day so no other train can come out on the circuit without the driver knowing. If two trains are in operation, the keys are kept by the signalman

Thanks for the real answer. That makes sense.

After a bit of googling I think the coil is called a steam siphon: http://www.noshok.com/pg/gauge_ass_pgs/pigtai.html Sounds like it's got some water in it to cool the steam and protect the gauge (as you say).
Keeping the points keys on the engine seems a very sensible idea.

Aye, a syphon. It sort of acts as a filter in some ways, as the condensation gathers in the bottom of the coil, so less water is kept in the steam as it reaches the gauge
