Lining styles for IP Jane / Mamod LocomotivesI had a play around with a few options for lining styles for a mamod Loco. At the moment I really like option 2 as below, Black with the Cyan and Red double lining. What do you guys think?

Option 4.
I like the style and the red but not convince cyan is right though, although I can't think of a better colour.

A little confusing as you are actually using a limited edition MSS loco to look like a Jane (MSS whistle & safety valve which do not appear on the Jane).
Are you also doing away with the handrails, as HSE will not allow your visiting Fred Dibnah driver access to the footplate without them!
I'd probably go with Option 6, but you need to put the name plates central (horizontal & vertical) to the lining for best effect, at least in my opinion.
How cheap is it to make your own name plates? And what is actually involved in making them?

I voted for 5, as it is closest to LNWR passenger lined black.
That would look awesome.

I have a desktop engraver for cutting brass and sheet brass. It's just the cost of a scrap of 1mm brass and then a few pounds for a replacement carbide engraving tool. The machine also drills the 1mm diameter holes for the 14BA Brass roundhead machine screws!
A more conventional way would be to etch them using ferric chloride (available from Maplin) you can print the design using a laser printer onto the Glossy Photo Paper meant for Inkjet Printers, then with a hot iron, iron onto a piece of clean, degreased brass. You can touch up with an etch resist pen, or permanent marker and then aggitate in a shallow tray of ferric chloride. It's a bit smelly though, plus you have the problems of disposing of the chemicals.

You noticed that the cab has been blocked out! It was the only photo I could find of the loco side on, just to get a rough idea of the colours and designs. It seems like I'm going to get a very mixed reaction, it's clearly a very personal choice! Looks like I'll need another loco!
Handrails will stay, I'm not sure if I should put the lining under those or make the panel slightly smaller. I'm going to add an extra handrail and sandboxes on the footplate too - so the Health and Safety Executive can breath a sigh of relief!

6 looks very good to me

If you keep the handrails a shiny brass colour then I think the lining would need to go outside of these. But if you paint the handrails black, then the lining could use the full panel, as the handrails should blend in.

You can never have enough locos!

Yep it's a photo of a limited edition mamod loco that I photoshopped!

Option 2 for me
I love that colour scheme!

It looks like Option 2 and Option 4 were popular choices! Good job too as those are the ones I was favouring myself too!
I think i'll go with the cyan/red lining but will have to draw up the tank with the handles and see how it'll look prior to lining the loco up.

I myself always wonder why it is that people select liveries based around BR locos or Penrhyn Railway scheme.

It wasn't a conscious decision just based on colours I liked! It just happened to work out that way!

I like black engines...and Fowlers are my favourite make of Traction Engine. The fowler livery is black with red, yellow and orange lining
