LSWR M7 0-4-4T

This will be the place where I post up information about the progress of this project. Here are a few pics to start off with:

The book that started it all. I bought this from the Swanage Railway when I was last there. It is about the entire history of LSWR Drummond long framed M7 0-4-4T No. 30053 from construction upto 1996.

LSWR drawing No. E8562, an original drawing for a long framed M7. This is in the centre of the book and I can't use it to work from as it is very hard to read the dimenions etc.!

This painting of two M7's at Swanage station adorns my dad's study wall. I believe he received it as a wedding anniversary present when mum, dad and all there friends were on a dining train on the Swanage. There's a drawer full of pics downstairs, so I'll have to dig them out! After June I'll set up a website....
SPOKESMAN

I like M7s, thinking of getting one for my layout - a sort of LSWR/SR visitor to my GWR line!
MTA

I might get one to put above my PC so I can look at it. I'll probably get the BR black version, as the other versions just don't appeal to me. Plus when I get round to building the 2 1/4 scale model, I'll be painting it in BR black with the 'horse and wheel' emblem and without the westinghouse pump

may I ask, what gauge 2 1/4" scale is? I am well into miniature railways and usually you here the size referred to by gauge. Am I right in thinking 5" gauge?

2 1/4" scale is the scale for standard gauge outline 10 1/4 inch gauge locos

wahey!!! another CADCAM advocate. My 7 1/4" QJ will eventually be made like this. There is a site which explains how to make a loco this way in a year!!

click on the tank loco link

Been on that site many times

been there many times!!! I really like Alice the Bagnall.

I've driven her many times, it's such a thrill driving her up the extension at Pulborough. Regulator fully open, full forward, the needle hovering just before the red line, then, shut the regulator, whack on the injector and a steady hand on the steam brake

He told me he hated a Black 5 at the GCR, because he had an accident of some sort Although i thnik he told me not to tell anyone else of the details BTW, here's a couple of vids you might like to see:

accident eh??? "STEPHEN!!!!!!!!!!!!"

I believe he derailed her quite hard. It always happens when i'm not around

Lovely films, haven't got onto 10 1/4" yet, the biggest so far is a "mini-Pulburough" Romulus at the Spinney railway.

I just thought, its not my black 5 he had an incident on, its another one. The regulator handle BROKE when he opened it, so all he could do to stop was wind the reverser back!
MTA

Snapped One member of the SDLR before he left for pastures new he commented on our CME. Apparently he was driving the Black 5 up the 1 in 48 (this is before the extension was even conceived), and heard a strange creak from the motion. He told our CME and he said "It'll be fine!". Two laps later, the Black 5 was going up the 1 in 48, and... the coupling rod snapped clean in half!!
bessytractor

never seen that happen before. When the "broken regulator" black 5 was in running in turns, fresh out of the shops, she seized and all the motion buckled!

This loco is really hairy to drive, the cab roof goes over the controls, and the regulator and firehole door handles feel ominously similar, so you grab the firehole door and wonder why you aren't shutting off power!!
MTA

Obviously that Black 5 and the one at Pulborough share a common thing. They are both b******s! The one at Pulborough has a pull out regulator, which is very sensitive. The end of it is right under the cab roof, so you have to get your hand in a position like you would with a gun when you pull the trigger. Also, the firebars are 2/3 flat, the last 1/3 being downhill, and being furthest away from you it's a pain to fire! Plus the part of the fire nearest the firehole door never burns as well as the rest of the fire. The joys of steam engines

well i was preparing 5000 for this Sunday *flails* and discovered why the steaming was indifferent last year. The damper I had no idea about was in the closed position, and absolutely clogged with ash suffice to say it will remain open for this season "blows off in station"

the firebars are the opposite way round figure wise to yours, 1/3 flat, 2/3 downhill!
MTA

Lucky, you actually have dampers The only engine that has dampers is Alice, and that's only because she has a Marine boiler
MTA

I received a letter today. I wasn't expecting one and it turned out to be from Drummond Locomotives Ltd. They have sent me a list of all the drawings they have along with the NRM catalogue numbers (that'll save a lot of searching when I go to the NRM!) along with their actual drawing number and name. For example: E.8171 Frame Arrangement for 0-4-4 Tank Engine. This is all of great use, I must get a folder to put all of the M7 stuff in now! I think it is safe to say the steam has entered the cylinders and the wheels are starting to move!
SillyBilly

When I was just over one I went on a main line trip behind a M7!!!!
MTA

The latest:

I had my article published in the SDLR Newsletter 'South Downs Way'. If anyone would like to see the article do give us a shout.

Since the article was published, someone has offered to do the drawings for me (on a paid basis) and it might be made easier by the fact that David Aitken has produced drawings for an M7 in 7 1/4 inch gauge. When the drawings have been done, and at least one M7 out of a batch of two (as the designer wants one too!) has been completed we plan on marketing it to anyone who wants a small, manageable 10 1/4 inch gauge engine. We already have one other interested customer

That's all the news so far, more as progress is made
