Luton Bowman PW201 restoration

Recently, I was very kindly given the remains of a Luton Bowman PW201. All I had to pay was postage, which turned out to be £6!

The base was painted really nicely, and it was all there bar chimney, burner and boiler strap.

So on with the restoration!!

Here's it as bought:

Les Marsh

But there's no strap for the boiler. Should be nice when its finished.
Steve_S

That'll be a cracker when it's sorted out.
James

Firebox is now repainted
James

Should the cylinder be painted??
Sandman

Should look like this Jimbo.

James

Ummm
johnreid

OOOOOO thats nice Sandy, I bet it polishes up nicely too
Mamodman123

Should turn out good lad!
Steve_S

I've just looked through my collection of PW201 pictures and none of them show a painted cylinder, so they were probably always polished like Sandy's. (Not usually so bright though! )

LOL.

I'll bring a pair of sunglasses to the STIA Steve.
James

Will hopefully have it finished tomorrow... from start to finish, complete restoration in 2 days

Does anyone have a really good photo of an original Luton Bowman decal?

There is a man who prints these decals and they are very good, you might be able to get one  if you speak nicely to him

Seriously you're not suggesting??...

YOU ARE
James

LMFAO the shit that are printed off on a home printer?

I'd rather pickle my own penis thank you very much
MamodFan

at least one person thinks it is funny.
Not quite a home printer, they are done on a Laser printer.

Pickled penis, now would you use Sarsons for that?
James

Could somebody tell me please...

How is the firebox attached to the base?

Should I just nut and bolt it together and then put some feet on the base?

I would lad! I had one of these once and sold it, didn't realise what it was

Originally riveted Jimbo.

I replaced them with nuts and bolts.

Easier to work with and never seen anyway.
MamodFan

Feet are just pieces of round felt, I have cut pieces from a polishing mop for them.
Sandman

Another tip for the wee book.

Thanks MF.
James

I have a load of self adhesive feet

I'll N&B it back together then guys!

Wooo can't wait to get it done! But it will look pretty shit with no chimney or burner won't it?

The chimney is very simple Jimbo.

Should be easily made.
James

Need it doing before STIA
Sandman

Then leave it till next year.

You've got plenty going as it is.
James

Naa must get it done
James

Sandman

James wrote:

5/8" od X 2. 1/4" Long.
James

Cheers Sandy
James

Here it is as it stands:

johnreid

I bet it would run a lot better with a boiler
All kidding aside, it looks like a great start. Keep posting as you progress.
James

LOL!

I got to solder the boiler up tomorrow, then polish it up, and then I'll be done!

Well I need to make a boiler strap and fasten it all down!
Les Marsh

Looking nice so far,
James

Thanks Les!

Now back onto the English essay and maths revising
Les Marsh

Oh yes, exams tomorrow. Good luck.
James

Thanks Les!

Les Marsh

I don't know how I managed over the years without a muckspreader. I must go out and get one tomorrow.

P.S.

Does it matter what sort of muck's in it?
James

LMAO!!!

Umm of course not

Ooo we might have a Bamfords muck spreader for sale soon

I'm going to reboard it and paint it up
MamodFan

"where ther's muck, ther's brass"
Les Marsh

See, you do learn something new everyday. I'm not sure how useful, but at least now I know.
Nick

Wow! This has been one fast restoration.
Wallace

Looking great James. Well done mate
James

Finished!!

For now anyways, need to redo some red on one pipe, make a chimney and burner and maybe a decal.

The pics I took do it no justice, they make her look quite shoddy, but I'll take some better ones at the weekend in natural light!

I made me own boiler band aswell
Nick

I think you should put the pics on here anyway so we can see, then update with new pictures.
James

Well I'm quite embarrased to post them, I feel like I've honestly (on me sheep's life!!) done a shit job on this one

Sandman

Considering what you had to start with, that is a great job Jimbo.

Just needs that chimney to finish it off.
Nick

You can always go back and fix things you don't like. At least it's another engine that survived.
steamyjim

Whats wrong with it James
James

Dunno, it just don't look "right"
erikl

ah, I was waiting for this topic! You've been realy fast restoring it!
I've had the same problem with soldering the pipe in, alse burned the paint, I now know that you can better solder first, than paint

by the way, great paint job on that baseplate and engine frame
James

LOL!!
Nick

Is there any way to get dents out of a boiler?

I was thinking, what if you filled it with water and froze it, the water would freeze and expand, taking out the dent, but don't let it expand too much that your boiler blows to pieces.
James

LOL!

I want a new boiler, the one on it at the mo is crap
erikl

told you

The boiler indeed is crappy, It's been opened, both end caps are soldered on crappy. I didn't clean it, but I suspected it to have been cut open actually, ath the bottom side, can you confirm that now you've cleaned?

Would be fun to build a new boiler for it I suppose, should be possible if you use the threats from this one.

Threats??
Build a boiler or else!!
Nick

Just fix the boiler up, it would be good practice.
steamyjim

I have to agree about the boiler

hmm... should be treads shouldn't it? (Sorry, I'm Dutch )
James

I thought it was queer why it had a seam down the bottom of the boiler!!!!

I'll just not steam it
Nick

Might be the safer way to go.
erikl

oh, by the way, james, you should bend those four little lips on the firebox, I straightened them to get it in three pieces.
James

Ahh they'll be rate
erikl

So I was right about that , who would have done such a thing?

well, it does actually hold up:  http://s53.photobucket.com/albums...ion=view&current=CIMG0635.flv

Wouldn't have tried it if I knew about that.
Nick

May have held earlier, but all the crud was probably like a glue.
8_10 Brass Cleaner

steamyjim wrote:

Me too, sorting the dints will not easy.

I for one woud invest in a new brass tube of the correct diameter, and replace it.

This guy is pretty good, and above all quick.

http://www.iantcobb.co.uk/brass_tube.htm

Otherwise there is Mallard Metal Packs in Brum. I find he is not so quick, but very helpfull.

I'd go for 18SWG, its a bit heavy, but you will be hard pressed to dint it.

My guess is that your Luton is 1 3/4??. Drill some holes, a bit of soldering and you have a grand boiler. No harder than what you have done so far. The brass will cost you not much more than a tenner
James

I reckon I should wait til I see an old dog of a 201 come up and buy that?
erikl

why not try and build you own boiler? would be a great challenge.
James

Naa mate, I prefer them as original as possible, so while a dog of an engine comes up, I'll keep it as it be!
erikl

ok, you might just have some luck with that, just like I had when this one came up on ebay.
Steve_S

It looks like the end caps have been off before, so you've nothing to lose by taking them off again. Then you'd be able to knock out the dents and put it all together again. If it didn't work out you'd be no worse off.
James

Dunno mate

I don't plan on steaming it
Steve_S

Aw... what's the point of that?
James

I'll just steam the Jensen if I get the urge

Plus I don't trust that bloody boiler LOL
