LUTON BOWMAN PW201 RUN IN 'THE GOOD FRIDAY SUN'

Just run the engine for the first time - a success, no major leaks and no other drama to speak of. After filling the boiler to the limit - I discoverd it primed too easily - overlow plug is too high, as with many Bowmans. After a spluttery start it ran very well, a smooth and punchy little unit - far supeiror to the MM1. It ran for just over 20 minutes on one full tank of meths. Some leaks from the safety valve after I put a new seal in - will tighten the spring more next time - didn't want to overdo it on the first run. Boiler was fine - although it has had some soldering work done in the past. All in all a very good aquisition.

Detailed pictures and videos to follow!

A few images of the engine, including some close ups of the detail of this fine little unit - great light so I can get good definition . . . .

Had to replace this . . .

Engine unit is sound and soild.

Curious cut out on reverse of the brass disc-crank.

For crank pin.

Tab and slot construction on the firebox.

Thick engine face plates, to accommodate the wide disc-crank.

A joint seem to run the entire length of the underside of the boiler.

Cylinder construction detail.

In steam!

Vids up later.

Enjoy
James

The joint on the boiler is interesting as I'm sure mine didn't have one

I THOUGHT IT WAS A REPAIR.

But it runs the entire length, like the boiler was made from a flat sheet and rolled into shape and then soldered.

That's how Australian engines were made from a flat sheet but you usually get a small indent as they usually fold the end of the sheet back on itself to create a hook that the other sheet locks into.
Yours doesn't look like that though.
Odd...............

Ill try and get some more pics of it. None of the tabs securing the boiler strap look as if they have been disturbed recently.

Just checked mine and its definately made from brass tube.
On another note the chimney on mine that is original is only a smidge over 6cm long, yours looks much longer than that.

Obviously chimney height was variable.

Runs fine Mike.

My chimney measures 6.5 cm. exactly.

Must have used what tube was handy at the time.
